The Niagara IceDogs missed an opportunity to move into sole possession of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference as they dropped a 9-1 decision to the Ottawa 67’s Tuesday night in Ottawa.
The game was rescheduled from earlier in the year following an injury to Niagara goaltender Tucker Tynan.
The IceDogs, who have dropped 19 of their last 21 games, are tied with the Kingston Frontenacs with 42 points. The Frontenacs have one more win and have played one fewer game.
The 67’s, who lead the Ontario Hockey League with 101 points, jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one period.
“Yeah, it sucks and it’s tough for sure,” IceDogs coach Billy Burke said. “Unfortunately we continue to learn tough lessons. How hard it is to play a regular shift in this league, how detailed and dialled in you have to be every shift to be an impact player in this league?
“Losing and losing big is obviously embarrassing for all of us but the silver lining is we are still in a battle to make the playoffs and the bad losses and adversity will make us a stronger team in the future. Ottawa is a very strong, deep, skilled team that play an excellent game.”
Burke would like to see the club be tougher to play against, particularly in their own end.
“One thing I think we can clean up this weekend is doing a better job of battling and protecting the area in front of our net and breaking the puck out quickly on our first opportunity,” he said.
Joseph Garreffa paced Ottawa with two goals while singles came off the sticks of Marco Rossi, Jack Quinn, Jack Beck, Noel Hoefenmayer, Austen Keating, Dylan Robinson and Thomas Johnston.
Ivan Lodnia netted the lone Niagara goal.
Andrew McLean faced 48 shots in goal for the IceDogs.
The IceDogs are in Mississauga Friday, home to Sudbury Saturday and at Oshawa Sunday.
