Falcons get back on track
The St. Catharines Falcons bounced back following a disappointing effort Friday to defeat the Welland Junior Canadians 4-1 Sunday in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference game at the Welland Arena.
The Falcons, coming off a 7-5 loss to Pelham Friday, turned in a better effort to pick up their ninth win of the season in 11 games.
“It’s always good to bounce back with a win after a loss,” Falcons coach Dan Fitzgerald said. “We were good, but had some lulls that we need to avoid if we’re going to continue to improve.”
The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Michael Davies followed by a short-handed marker by Tanner Ferreira.
Gianluca Fucco made it 3-0 early in the second with another goal while the Falcons were killing a penalty. It was the lone goal of the period.
Davies netted his second of the game to put the Falcons up 4-0 less than two minutes into the third.
Ryan Israel ruined Owen Savory’s bid for a shutout with under two minutes to play.
“We killed very well tonight, but took too many penalties and as a result we didn’t have much flow in our game. For what it was, I’m happy we got the win and now we can build off it for a big game Tuesday,” Fitzgerald said.
The Falcons host the Niagara Falls Canucks Tuesday at 7 p.m.
