REDS TOP MUSTANGS
Noah Honsberger poured in 19 points to lead the Denis Morris Reds to a 49-47 win over the St. Michael’s Mustangs in Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior boys basketball action.
Trailing 15-12 after one quarter, the Reds took a 24-22 lead into the half time break – a lead they would never give up against the pesky Mustangs. Denis Morris led by as many as 12 into the fourth quarter, however the Mustangs wouldn’t go away and missed a potential game-winning three pointer as time ran out.
Max Grant chipped in 10 points for the Reds, followed by Mitchell McArthur with eight, Zubeer Liban with five, Michael Cassidy with four and Michael Conlon with three.
Tomer Mateo led St. Michael’s with 13, while Owen Hall, Steven Cabrara and Dusan Krkljus had eight points apiece. R.J. Mateo and Hayden Spellier each had four, while Jake Harris had two to round out the scoring.
Denis Morris now sits at 2-2 in league play while the Mustangs dropped to 1-3
In an earlier game, the Reds dropped a hard-fought 56-40 decision to the St. Paul Patriots.
The Reds led 10-9 after one quarter and trailed 23-20 heading into the half. St. Paul turned up the pressure in the third quarter and opened up a 42-32 lead after three quarters. The Reds were able to get the lead to single digits twice but could not manage to close the gap to any less than eight.
Richard Werner led the way for the home-court Patriots with 24, while Victor Kariuki tossed in 14. The Reds were led by Honsberger and Cassidy with 12 points each. Grant added nine and Liban had seven.
