Local sports: Niagara JUEL and JUEL Prep; Dakin/Woodburn Classic

NIAGARA JUEL 1-2 IN WINDSOR
The Niagara JUEL girls basketball team went 1-2 in league play in Windsor, defeating London Gold Medal 100-53 and losing 55-46 to the Tri-Country and 67-64 to Hamilton Transway.
In defeating London, Niagara built quarter leads of 28-9, 50-25 and 74-38. Top Niagara performers in the win over London Gold Medal (1-5) were: Beth Howlett, 18 points; Viktoria Cubelic, 11 points and seven rebounds; Taylor Doyle, 11 points; Julia Colavecchia, 10 points; and, Kaley DeMont, nine points.
Against Hamilton Transway (2-3), Niagara led 22-17 after one quarter and 39-35 at the half, before Hamilton took the lead by outscoring Niagara 22-10 in the third quarter. Leading the way for Niagara were: Colavecchia, 13 points; Howlett, 11 points; Elle Cooney, nine points and four boards; DeMont, nine points; and, Cubelic, eight points and six rebounds.
In improving to 6-0 on the season, Tri-County built quarter leads of 15-11, 39-25 and 41-33 on Niagara. Leading the way for Niagara were: Tatyanna Burke, 11 points and four rebounds; DeMont, 10 points and four rebounds; Colavecchia, eight points and five offensive rebounds; and, Taylor Doyle, five points and six boards.
Next up for Niagara (2-4) are games in Barrie and Brantford on Feb. 17 and 18.
NIAGARA JUEL PREP 1-2
The Niagara JUEL Prep girls basketball team travelled to Windsor this past weekend for league play and returned home 1-2.
In their opening game on Saturday afternoon, NJP bounced back from an earlier 17-point exhibition game loss to Tri-County–Kitchener to defeat them 58-57 in a thrilling game. Leading the way for NJP were Madison O’Brien with 10 points. Other top scorers were Ally Sentance (9), Allison Addy (9), Tess Puchalski (5), Emily Campbell (5), Molly Taylor (5) and Olivia Krieger (5).
In the evening game, NJP lost 66-49 to the Windsor Valiants. Top scorers for NJP were Addy (13), Taylor (8), O’Brien (7) and Puchalski (6).
On Sunday morning, NJP was defeated by London Ramblers 70-54. Trailing by 17 points at the half after giving up 10 threes to a hot Ramblers team, a determined NJP squad came out and played with a lot of grit in the second half closing the gap to within three late in the game before losing in a great team effort. Leading the way for NJP were Sentance (9), Eliana Mariella (8), O’Brien (7), Addy (6) and Taylor (5).
Niagara Juel Prep is on the road again February 17-18 in Brampton taking on Ottawa, Kingston Impact and Scarborough Blues.
DAKIN/WOODBURN CLASSIC
Rahim Bardi scored 24 points to lead the Governor Simcoe Redcoats senior boys basketball team to a 62-48 victory over Ancaster in the championship game of the inaugural John Dakin and Pat Woodburn Classic.
Also scoring for the Redcoats in the final were Darren Johnston (12), Alex Cochrane (12), Dainon Bango (9) and Mason MacEachern (5). S. Wahidi topped Ancaster with 22 points.
Ancaster advanced to the final by defeating Orchard Park 60-50 and Simcoe defeated the Eden Flyers 55-32 in the other semifinal.
Scoring for the Redcoats in the semifinal victory over Eden were Bardi (15), Cal Anderson (11), Johnston (10), Bango (8), MacEachern (6), Cochrane (5) and Sean Climenhage (2). Replying for the Flyers were Isaiah Lindsay (19), Micah Nieuwets (4), Ryan Gilbert (3), Charlie Edgar (3), Trevor Heida (2) and Sam Pearson (1).
In the consolation final, Diego Ruiz netted 21 to power the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs to a 57-48 victory over the St. Catharines Collegiate Saints.
Also scoring for the Bulldogs are Asim Serri (12), Andres Sanchez (12), Mo Esseri (5), Ahmed Mohammed (2), Drake Christie (2) and Halen Wang (1).
Scoring for Collegiate were Robert Smith (17), Nicholas Sindingan (9), Jerrell Plumadore (8), Justin Crawford (4), Sheldon Brown (4), Kaleb Patrong (2), Chris Ceide (2) and Nathan Taylor (2).
In the junior final, Orchard Park defeated A.N. Myer 50-45. No scorers were available because names on game sheet were incomplete.
