IceDogs win sixth straight; River Lions lose at home

The Niagara IceDogs secured home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs with a 6-3 triumph over the Erie Otters in Ontario Hockey League action Friday in Erie.
The IceDogs, who have now won six straight, will square off versus the Oshawa Generals in a best-of-seven quarter-final playoff series. The Generals dropped an 8-4 decision at home to Peterborough Friday.
Niagara trailed 2-1 after one period before coming alive in the second to take a 4-3 lead after two. The IceDogs then netted the only two goals of the final period.
Ben Jones and Johnny Corneil led the way for the IceDogs with two goals each while Oliver Castleman and Danial Singer added singles. Kirill Maksimov chipped in with four assists and Johnathon Schaefer three.
Patrick Fellows, Gera Poddubnyi and Owen Headrick replied for the Otters.
Colton Incze made 30 saves to pick up the win in net.
The IceDogs wrap up the regular season Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. versus the Mississauga Steelheads.
River Lions sunk by Storm
The Niagara River Lions dropped to 15-20 with a 106-97 loss to the Island Storm in National Basketball League of Canada play Friday night at the Meridian Centre.
Niagara jumped out to a 29-24 lead after one quarter but scored just 18 in the second quarter and trailed 49-47 at the half. The River Lions found themselves down by 10 after three quarters before outscoring the Storm 29-28 in the final 12 minutes.
Jaylon Tate paced the River Lions with 24 points while Connor Wood added 17, Ronnie Johnson 14 and Sam Muldrow 12.
Du’Vaughn Maxwell had 26 and Kemy Osse 23 for the winners.
The River Lions shot just 37.4 per cent from the floor, 38.2 per cent from three-point range, and 82.2 per cent from the foul line.
The River Lions host the St. John’s Edge Thursday.
