Area sports: Gymnastics Energy provincial qualifiers; Niagara JUEL Prep; Bowling scores
Seventeen of 23 Gymnastics Energy’s provincial girls team members have qualified for the provincial championships April 5-8 in Windsor.’
Qualifiers were Abbey Harris, Jasmine Griese, Jazmine Deveau, Jia DiRenzo-Baty, Emi Suzuki, Elizabeth Baker, Emilie Hamilton, Charlotte Berner, Paige Norton, Olivia Pilliteri, Hannah Fowler, Ava Tirpko, Brianna Cocco, Kelsey Czegeny, Chloe McIntyre, Natalie Wood and Jocelyn Mouradian (alternate).
In addition to competing in the all-around category, four athletes earned their way into event finals. They are: Emilie Hamilton, bars, alternate in vault; Jazmine Deveau, bars, alternate in vault; Elizabeth Baker, floor; and, Jia DiRenzo-Baty, alternate in beam.
At the Muskoka Classic (third provincial qualifier, Gymnastics Energy’s Level 6-8 Team brought home 14 gold medals, 22 silver medals and 10 bronze medals.

Level 8: Abbey Harris of Fonthill (age 12), first overall with 36.475, gold on bars and beam, and silver on vault; Jasmine Griese of Niagara on the Lake (age 12), second overall, gold on vault, silver on bars, and bronze on beam and floor.
Level 7: Jazmine Deveau of Lincoln (age 14), first overall with 38.225, and silver on vault, bars and floor; Jia DiRenzo-Baty of St. Catharines (age 16+), first overall with 37.950, silver on bars, beam and floor, and bronze on vault; Emi Suzuki of Niagara Falls (age 11), first overall with 37.80, gold in vault, bars and floor, and silver on beam; Elizabeth Baker of Niagara Falls (age 14), third overall, gold on floor and silver on beam; Emilie Hamilton of Ridgeville (age 16+), gold on vault and bars; Charlotte Berner of St. Catharines (age 12), silver on floor and bronze on vault; Paige Norton of Welland (age 16+), silver on vault; and, Kali MacDonald of St. Catharines (age 13) earned bronze on bars.
Level 6: Olivia Pillitteri of Virgil (age 16+), second all around, and silver on vault and floor; Hannah Fowler of St. Catharines (age 15), third all around and silver in bars, beam and floor; Ava Tirpko of Thorold (age 15, gold on beam and silver on floor; Brianna Cocco of St. Catharines (age 12), silver on vault and bronze on bars; Kelsey Czegeny of Lincoln (age 14), bronze on vault and floor; Chloe McIntyre of St. Catharines (age 11), silver on bars.
MOLLY TAYLOR HONOURED
Niagara JUEL Prep player Molly Taylor has been named the JUEL Prep League’s Player of the Week for its third weekend of play.
“Molly had an explosive weekend for her Niagara JUEL Prep team with an average of 13 points per game as well as pulling down 19 rebounds,” Niagara coach Don Larman said. “Her strong play at both ends of the court helped her team to a 3-0 weekend.”
Larman is seeing Taylor take on more of a leadership role in her second year with the squad.
“This year, she is contributing in so many positive ways that she has become an impact player for us,” he said.
Through nine games this season, the Grade 10 athlete from A.N. Myer Secondary School is averaging 8.4 points and a team-leading 6.6 rebounds per game.
Taylor was a starter on A.N, Myer’s senior team this past season and was a member of a Niagara Rangers team that won an OBA Division 1 championship when she was in Grade 8.
Niagara’s JUEL and JUEL prep teams will be playing in Niagara this weekend.
The JUEL team (6-5) plays: Blessed Sacrament at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Sir Winston Churchill; Simcoe Muskoka at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Brock; and, Hamilton Transway Sunday at 9 a.m. at Brock.
The JUEL Prep team (5-4) plays: Blessed Sacrament Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Brock; Tri-County Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Sir Winston Churchill; and, Hamilton Transway Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Sir Winston Churchill.
