Sports ticker: Spears looking for players; River Lions derail Express; Riverhawks prospects camp
Summer football season is approaching and the Niagara Spears are looking for a few good young men.
The Spears will suit up four teams — varsity, two at the junior varsity level and bantam —in the Ontario Varsity Football League this year and begin tryouts Monday at Kiwanis Field at 6:30 p.m. for all divisions.
“Our numbers are OK, but we always want more,” junior varsity coach Arthur Martin said. “We have kids who show up who think they are at that level and unfortunately it doesn’t work out for them.”
Smith said so far there are 72 players signed up for the two junior varsity level teams.
“Ideally, I’d like between 92 and 110 because some kids drop out and kids get injuries,” he said.
Varsity and bantam numbers are at about 30. Smith said about 45 players per team is ideal.
Players can register and sign up at the field. Cost is $200 to tryout. The cost to play once a player makes a team is $525.
“One of our benefits is that we have a lot of fundraising so if a player has a parent who works for a company they can sponsor a kid, which reduces registration costs,” Smith said.

RIVER LIONS TOP EXPRESS
Sam Muldrow had 16 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots Thursday night to power the Niagara River Lions to a 103-95 victory over the visiting Windsor Express in National Basketball League of Canada play.
Niagara led 31-27 after one quarter and trailed 48-46 at the half before outscoring Windsor 57-47 in the second half to improve to 16-22 on the season. Windsor fell to 20-19 with the loss.
Also contributing to Niagara’s win were: Kris Joseph, 23 points and nine rebounds; Connor Wood, 24 points; Dwayne Smith, 12 points and seven rebounds; and, Jaylon Tate, eight points and 13 assists.
Top scorers for Windsor were Maurice Jones with 28 points and Shaquille Keith with 17.
RIVERHAWKS PROSPECTS CAMP
The Niagara RiverHawks junior C hockey club will hold its Spring Prospect Camp at the Gale Centre on Pad 1 on Wednesday, May 30 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Thursday, May 31 from 6 to 9 p.m.
The club is eager to build on an inspiring run to finish the regular season and playoff, where they battled the third-place Port Dover Sailors to a dramatic seven-game series. The Sailors won Game 7 6-5 after three straight overtime games.
Cost of the camp is $80 for both sessions, payable at registration.
