JUEL PREP 3-1 IN CLEVELAND
The Niagara Juel Prep girls travelled to Cleveland last weekend for an AAU tournament and went 3-1 playing up in the Varsity Girls Division.
Niagara opened up the weekend with a 52-42 win over ABC from Cleveland. Scoring for NJP were Ally Sentance (12), Olivia Krieger (11), Allison Addy (9), Tess Puchalski (8), Josee Severin (4) and Madison O’Brien (4). Puchalski was 4-for-4 from the foul line.
In Niagara’s second game, all 10 players hit the score sheet for NJP in its 38-15 victory over RISE High AAU. Scorers were Krieger (10), O’Brien (6), Sydney Grummett (5), Addy (5), Eliana Mariella (4), Sentance (4), Caughill (4), Severin (3), Puchalski (2) and Emily Campbell (2). Caughill was 4-for-4 from the foul line.
Niagara then tipped off against a tough National Basketball Academy team on Sunday morning in a quarter-final matchup. The TNBA led for most of the game, however, Niagara pulled out a 49-46 victory with some solid defence and crucial rebounding in the last three minutes of the game. Leading the way for NJP were Sentance (17), Grummett (11), Puchalski (6), O’Brien (4) and Addy (4).
In the semifinals against a polished Ohio SHOCK team, Niagara lost a 61-30 decision. A slow start and shots not falling put NJP in a position that it could not recover from in the second half. Leading the way for NJP were Campbell (9), Severin (8) and Caughill (4).
Niagara returns to Juel Prep league play April 28 and 29 in London against Simcoe-Muskoka Royals, Hamilton Transway and the London Ramblers.
ICEDOGS RAISE FUNDS FOR SMILEZONE
The Niagara IceDogs announced they have raised $32,803.15 in support of the Smilezone Foundation through a recent charity hockey tournament.
The tournament consisted of eight corporate teams from around the Niagara Region, including sponsorships from Courtyard by Marriott Niagara Falls, Canadian Tire at Fourth and Louth – St. Catharines, Niagara Trailers, Henley Honda/Subaru of Niagara, Performance BMW, Meridian Credit Union, Pen Centre, Heart of Niagara Hotels, Credit Bureau Services Canada, and Rankin Construction, who captured the tournament championship.
All food and snacks were generously donated by the Real Canadian Superstore, St. Catharines.
What originated as an idea to help children in local communities, Smilezone has grown to a national organization that provides areas in hospitals, private treatment and development centres, and children clinics to improve the lives of children facing illness, disabilities, physical and emotional obstacles. Smilezone gives kids a place to take a break from their day-to-day battles; a place that would put a smile on a child’s face.
FEARON ADDED TO CANADA GAMES BOARD
Brock University President Gervan Fearon has been added to the Board of Directors for the 2021 Canada Summer Games Host Society.
Fearon is the federal government’s appointee to the 17-person board that is responsible for planning and delivering the Games in Niagara just over three years from now.
“I am confident that Dr. Fearon will be a welcome addition to the current membership of the board,” wrote Canada’s Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities Kirsty Duncan.
Board chair Doug Hamilton welcomed the announcement.
“The 2021 Canada Games Society is extremely excited about the opportunity to work with Dr. Fearon,”Hamilton said. “Gervan’s wealth of experience and passion for sport and community development will help make the 2021 Canada Games an incredible success.”
Fearon said his appointment will let Brock be an energetic partner that helps ensure the success of an event that has huge importance to the future growth of the Niagara community.
“It is an honour to be a member of the Board working towards the Niagara region hosting the 2021 Canada Games,” Fearon said. “As president of Brock University and a member of the Niagara community, I am thrilled to be working alongside outstanding colleagues on this critical initiative.”
Fearon describes the Games as an important mechanism for regional community and economic development.
“The Canada Games is an opportunity for us all to build community, celebrate the outstanding achievements of our athletes and come together as Canadians in recognition of excellence.”
The Canada Games will bring approximately 5,000 young athletes from across Canada to Niagara in the summer of 2021. It is expected that about 5,000 volunteers will be needed to host the major event, and that the Games will bring an economic impact of about $200 million to the Niagara area.
