Lacrosse roundup; IceDogs sign pick
The St. Catharines Athletics are on a roll.
The A’s made it four wins in a row with a 12-9 overtime triumph over the Orangeville Northmen Friday and now sit in second place in the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior A standings with a 6-3 record.
The A’s trail Burlington by two points for first place. The A’s and Chiefs square off Monday in Burlington.
In Orangeville, the A’s and Northmen were tied 8-8 after regulation before St. Catharines dominated the extra period outscoring Orangeville 4-1.
Jake McNabb paced the A’s with four goals while Alex Simmons added three goals and four assists. Carter Zavitz chipped in with two goals while Jeff Wittig had a goal and five assists. Mason Kamminga and Latrell Harris also scored.
Nick Damude made 45 saves in goal to pick up the win.
The A’s are home to Six Nations Wednesday.
JUNIOR B
The St. Catharines Spartans dropped a pair of games last week, 12-5 to Wallaceburg at home Saturday and 8-7 at Hamilton.
The Spartans trailed the Red Devils 2-1 Saturday after one period before Wallaceburg took control outscoring St. Catharines 7-1 in the second period.
Mario Caito had two goals for the Spartans while Alex Gaston, Blake Halliday and Sam LeClair added singles.
Jacob McMillan had a pair for St. Catharines in Hamilton while LeClair, Adam Kirchmayer, John Kit, Tyler Kolodka and Connor Aquanno also scored.
The Spartans, 5-11-1, are at Orangeville Tuesday, London Friday and Welland Sunday to wrap up the regular season.
ICEDOGS SIGN PICK
The Niagara IceDogs have inked Jake Uberti to a standard player agreement.
The centre was selected in the fourth round, 72nd overall, in the 2018 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.
“We are thrilled to be adding Jake to the IceDogs,” Niagara general manager Joey Burke said. “He has been consistently impressive all year and will fit in perfectly with our fast, skilled group.
“This is an exciting time in Niagara and Jake is a fantastic addition and we couldn’t be more excited to add him to the IceDogs family.”
Uberti had an outstanding season in minor midget as a member of the Mississauga Reps of the Greater Toronto Hockey League with 11 goals and 31 points over 33 games.
Uberti was named the most valuable player at the OHL Gold Cup, where, as a member of Team GTHL Blue, he finished with four goals and five assists in just four games, helping lead them to a tournament championship. Uberti’s nine points led the tournament.
