Oct. 15: Junior hockey roundup: IceDogs split pair; Junior B results; Riverhawks split
The Niagara IceDogs picked up three of a possible four points on the weekend.
The IceDogs dropped a 6-5 overtime decision at Barrie Saturday night and followed it up with a 5-1 win at Sudbury Sunday afternoon.
The IceDogs earned a point Saturday despite losing in overtime when Justin Murray scored halfway through the extra period.
The IceDogs had tied the scored at 5-5 with a late goal by Kirill Maksimov.
Former Thorold Blackhawk Mason Howard, Ian Martin, Billy Constantinou and impressive rookie Kyen Sopa also scored for Niagara.
Murray paced the Colts with a pair while Joey Keane, Peter Flemming, Aidan Brown and Sam Rhodes added singles.
Stephen Dhillon made 23 saves and was saddled with the loss.
Sunday in Sudbury, the IceDogs jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period.
Colton Incze rebounded with a strong game in goal, kicking out 34 shots.
Oliver Castleman had two goals while Daniel Bukac, Philip Tomasino and Ivan Lodnia added singles.
Blake Murray fired the lone Sudbury goal.
The IceDogs continue to be thin on defence with Liam Ham, Elijah Roberts and Drew Hunter on the sidelines with injuries. Rookie Lleyton Moore did not return to the bench to start the third period after blocking a shot and then taking a high hit from the Wolves Darian Pilon in the second period.
Niagara finished the game with Bradey Johnson, Bukac, Constantinou and Howard on defence.
The IceDogs, 5-2-2, are at Erie Wednesday and home to Ottawa Thursday and Windsor Friday.
JUNIOR B
Falcons 4 Junior Canadians 2
The St. Catharines Falcons made it five in a row with a win at Welland Sunday night.
Dawson McKinney netted a pair of goals while Kyle West and Gage Stephney also scored.
Quinn Chevers and Michael Arch replied for Welland, which dropped to 2-8.
The Falcons, 6-3, are home to Pelham Friday and at Pelham Sunday afternoon.
Canucks 6 Panthers 3
The Niagara Falls Canucks continue to roll on.
The Canucks made it 11 in a row to remain perfect to start the season with a win at Pelham Sunday afternoon.
Justin Kyle and Matthew Riva each had two goals for the Canucks while Mitch Mendonca and Harrison Cottam also scored.
Devon Saunders, Matt Ruigrok and Thomas Young scored for the Panthers, who fell to 9-3.
The Panthers also topped the Fort Erie Meteors 4-2 Saturday.
Young scored twice while Adam Scholz and Noah Caperchione added singles.
Luca Mazzo netted the lone goal for Fort Erie, which dropped to 1-9.
JUNIOR C
The Niagara Riverhawks split a pair of weekend games dropping a 2-0 decision to Hagersville Saturday night before winning 9-5 Sunday afternoon in Hamilton in Provincial Junior Hockey League action.
Matt Boere made 31 saves at Hagersville while Jamie Ferguson made all 25 stops in earning his first shutout of the season.
Sunday afternoon in Hamilton the Riverhawks found their scoring touch as they defeated the short staffed Hamilton Huskies Jr Blues.
The Riverhawks Bailey Pritchard opened the scoring at 4:16 of the first followed by Jacob Saddler at 7:54.
The Riverhawks offence for six goals in the middle frame. Reid Lowe, Tyler Langlais with a pair, Zach Snider, Derek Pymont and Dante Massi scored while Tyler Seguin added one more in the third.
Hamilton outshot the RiverHawks 40-36 overall with Boere making 35 saves in the win.
The Riverhawks return home Thursday when they host winless Dunnville Mudcats at the Gale Centre.
The Riverhawks are now 6-4 on the season with 12 points and sit third in the Bloomfield division behind Glanbrook (21) and Grimsby (20).
