Rookie guard Alannah Yates has been named Niagara College’s female athlete of the week.
Yates, who played senior boys high school basketball in Hamilton, helped Niagara’s women’s basketball team defeat the Sault Cougars 64-47 and 73-51. She had 16 points, five rebounds, and two assists in 15 minutes of playing time in the first game and 17 points, four rebounds, and six assists in the second.
After a slow start, Yates has recorded three straight double-digit scoring performances.
“Alannah is starting to play like we thought she could in September,” Niagara head coach Mike Beccaria said. “Her progress has been steady and (her) confidence is growing as a key contributor in this league.”
Also performing well for Niagara in the 64-47 victory were: Centennial grad Bridget Atkinson, 21 points and 10 rebounds; and, Holy Cross grad Tia Stys, five points and seven rebounds.
Also contributing for Niagara in the second game were: Atkinson, 16 points, six rebounds, five steals and five assists; and, Niagara Falls native Rysa Delmundo, 18 points.
Niagara’s record now sits at 5-4, good enough for sixth place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Division.
NIAGARA’S BEST MAN
Earning the college’s male athlete of the week award was volleyball player Robbie Zalewski.
The second-year libero has played a key role in a four-game winning streak, including a five-set victory (31-29, 23-25, 23-25, 25-23 and 15-12) over the Sheridan Bruins. He had a season-high 16 digs, while chipping in a pair of assists. The dig total was the second highest of Zalewski’s career. The team captain, a graduate of Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute, has been a leader on the team.

Niagara has a 4-3 record, good enough for sixth place in the OCAA West Division.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The second-place Niagara men’s basketball team pushed its record to 7-2 with 111-41 and 116-45 thumpings of the Sault Cougars.
Reigning Canadian Colleges Athletic Association athlete of the week Van Hutchinson Jr. led the way in the first game with 29 points and 17 rebounds. Also performing well were: Daniel Lokole, 18 points and six rebounds; Jose Ramos, 13 points and eight boards; Saint Paul alumnus Johnnie Richardson, 12 points and six assists; and, Keveshan Padachey, 12 points.
“A solid team effort tonight (Saturday),” head coach Phil Mosley said. “We played with defensive intensity and had players take advantage of extra playing time to contribute to the win.”
Leading the way for Niagara in the 116-45 skinning were: Van Hutchinson Jr., 27 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists; Padachey, 22 points; Centennial grad Alex Elliott, 14 points; Ramos, 13 points and seven rebounds; Ridley grad Livingston Bromwell, 11 points and 13 boards; and, Governor Simcoe alumnus Rahim Bardi, eight points and 12 rebounds in 18 minutes of floor time.
“In the second game of a back-to-back, the Knights kept a high pace and put the game out of reach early,” Mosley said. “Once again, we were able to play lots of guys and work on some defensive systems which will help us later in the season.”
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Niagara’s fourth-place women’s volleyball squad pushed its record to 5-2 with a 3-1 victory (20-25, (25-23, 25-22 and 25-23) over the Sheridan Bruins.
Topping the stat sheet for Niagara were: Jordan Koslowski, 18 kills and 23 points; Kelsey Soules, 13 points, including seven kills and five blocks; and, Melissa McFadden, 37 assists.
