Dec. 11 Area sports: DM basketball; Minor hockey; Father Tony Tournament; Bowling results
The Denis Morris Reds fell just short dropping a 47-45 decision to the St. Paul Patriots in Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior boys basketball action.
“These close losses at home are getting tough to take,” said DM head coach Randy Conlon, referring to last week’s four-point loss to the Centennial Cougars in the quarter-finals of the Standard Tournament. “We need to find a way to win these games, especially in our gym.”
The Reds trailed 14-12 after one quarter and the teams were tied at 22-22 heading into the half time break. The Patriots led 37-32 heading into the final frame where the Reds rally fell just short.
“We went cold in the third and just couldn’t recover,” Conlon added.
Will Schmahl led all scorers for the Patriots with 20 points, while Jerwyn Tutanes chipped in 10.
The Reds were led by Zubeer Liban with 17. Michael Conlon tossed in 14 and Noah Honsberger added 10.
TIGERS REMAIN HOT
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene’s Skate Sharpening Tigers are one of the hottest teams in the OMHA right now, having gone 8-1-1 in their last 10 and they are currently riding a six-game winning streak.
Riley Caron earned his fifth shutout of the year in a 4-0 win over Niagara Falls with Jonah Bello netting the game winner and Tanner Cutler finishing things off with a natural hat trick.
The Tigers then defeated Pelham 7-2 with Cutler recording a five-point night with a goal and four assists. Colby Franchetti led the Tigers charge with three goals while Mason Risto, Bello and Julian Belcastro rounded out the scoring.
Samuel Bolduc and Darwin Mayes responded for Pelham.
Welland, now 12-2-3 in league play, are idle until next Monday when they host Port Colborne at 6:50 p.m.
Last week, the Tigers defeated Fort Erie 3-2 on the road and followed that up at home with a 3-1 win over Thorold to climb into a three-way tie for top spot with Grimsby and Niagara-on-the-Lake with Welland holding games-in-hand against both.
Tanner Cutler scored twice and Mason Risto once against Thorold.
Brayden Steele replied for Thorold.
Cutler recorded a pair against Fort Erie with Carson McComber netting the other.
Dekin Hill and Brentin Porter scored for the Meteors.
BANTAMS EDGE WEST LINCOLN
The Welland Buckner’s Source for Sports minor bantam A Tigers edged West Lincoln 4-3.
Ethan McCarthy, Ethan Nason, Owen Cotter and Logan Joiner scored while Cole Pelletier added two assists.
The Tigers improved to 8-3-1.
PEEWEES POUR IT ON
The Welland Telus major peewee A Tigers are on fire with an 8-0-2 record in their last 10 games.
The team continued their strong play this week when they handed the Glanbrook Rangers their first regular season loss and then battled back to earn a tie with the Garden City Falcons.
Eli Moormann, Nicolas DiPietro and Kaleb Séguin powered the Tigers past Glanbrook 3-1, which was Welland’s sixth straight victory in divisional play.
Nico Cavoto scored the lone Rangers tally.
DiPietro and Quinten Hemauer scored twice each as Welland erased a three-goal third period deficit to earn a 4-4 draw in St. Catharines. Ty Kostyniuk, with a hat-trick, and Sutter Pilon rounded out the scoring for Garden City.
Welland, now 10-2-4 in league play, will host Pelham on Wednesday night at 7:20 p.m. before traveling to Stoney Creek on Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup.
STILL UNDEFEATED
The Welland Mike Knapp Ford novice A Tigers continue to enjoy the comforts of playing on home ice, extending their regular season undefeated string to 13 games on the weekend with two wins.
The Tigers topped Glanbrook 6-0 as Brady Matte earned the shutout.
Dylan Wood had two goals while Mackenzie Welychka, Noah Rousseau, Blake Hudak and Sebastien Boucher also scored.
The Tigers then edged the Port Colborne Sailors 3-2 in the first meeting of the season between the two clubs.
Leading the offence for the Welland Tigers was Mackenzie Welychka with two goals while Hudson Bassi added one.
In the Welland net for the win was Jackson MacLeod.
The Tigers regular season record now stands at 12–0–1.
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Fort Erie to take on the Fort Erie Novice Meteors.
FATHER TONY TOURNAMENT
Saint Charles of Sudbury defeated Saint Michael of Niagara Falls in the championship final of the 2018 Father Tony MAC Super Saturday Hockey Tournament at the Gale Centre.
St. Charles defeated Denis Morris and Saint Michael topped St. Edward in the semifinals to advance.
