Grade 9 student shines in Top 20 game

With Zone 3 about to start Wednesday night’s 14th Annual Niagara Girls All-Star top 20 game at St. Catharines Collegiate with only six players, Corynn Parker was a late, but much needed arrival.
The Grade 9 student at Jean Vanier showed up right before tip-off and then proceeded to nab Zone 3 player of the game honours with 13 points as Zone 3 fell 55-48 to Zone 4 in the annual game.
Like the other players on the Zone 3 bench, Parker was gassed, but the Niagara Girls Basketball Academy (Welland) JUEL Prep player enjoyed her first taste of the annual high school all-star games.
“It was a really great experience for me, not only as one of the younger players but someone who hasn’t played much yet the high school level,” the 14-year-old said. “It was great to see what my competition is and what I have to look forward to next year.”
Parker was pleased with the way she played Wednesday and enjoyed the entire experience.
“I had fun and I like showcasing my skills,” she said.
She feels she learned a lot in her first year of playing senior basketball at Jean Vanier.
“It was much more organized compared to elementary school where you are just playing around,” she said. “Vanier has girls who play outside of school and they know what they are doing.”
Parker feels the biggest step she took as a player this season was getting stronger.
“I really started doing weight training and getting myself faster and stronger so I could compete with the older girls.”
She already knows what she needs to work on for second season at Vanier and is ready for the challenge of getting better.
“I am going to train as much and as hard as I can and keep improving all the time.”
She has lofty goals for her hardwood career.
“I want to get a university scholarship and play for the national team,” she said.
