Britton struts her stuff
When Zone 4 coach Brian MacIssac scanned his roster, he immediately noticed one name in particular.
The coach of the Eden Flyers remembered a matchup his team had with the Denis Morris Reds and how hard the Flyers worked to try and contain Jordyn Britton.
“When I saw the lineups, I was pretty happy to have Jordyn,” MacIssac said, after Britton scored 22 points and was named the Zone 4 player of the game. “We keyed on her so hard and she still scored 20-plus.”
Britton, a 17-year-old, Grade 11 student, helped Zone 4 top Zone 3 55-48 at the14th Annual Niagara Girls All-Star top 20 game played at St. Catharines Collegiate Wednesday.
Britton was pleased with her effort.
“We talked about playing with new faces and new people and see it how it would work as a team not having a practice,” she said. “It wasn’t that difficult. It was kind of easy catching on to how people play.
“It was high-end intensity; it felt good.”
MacIssac liked a lot of what he saw from Britton.
“She struggled at bit in the first half, but she had a nice run in the fourth and kind of put the game away,” he said. “She finished well and hit a few free throws.
“I was pleasantry surprised how well she ran the floor. She’s very athletic and she got a lot of points in transition as well.”
Britton, who plays with the St. Catharines Rebels, enjoyed the experience.
“I knew it was going to be hard competition and we would have to fight through it,” she said.
MacIssac said the pre-game chat centred on balancing having a good time and competing.
“We did talk about having fun and trusting your teammates and sharing the ball and being inclusive of everybody,” he said. “It’s competition between zones and we wanted a sweep.
“We were hoping to play as hard as we could and as well as we could. It was a great game.”
MacIssac tipped his cap to the Zone 3, which dressed only seven players.
“They have some real strong players and a little later in the fourth we were able to turn them over and get some points in transition.”
