SOSSA wrestling results: Adams eyes OFSAA repeat
Samantha Adams has aspirations to win another national wrestling title, but first on the agenda is defending her Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations’ championship at 54 kilograms.
“It’s my goal,” said the Grade 11 student at Beamsville and District Secondary School. “I have been training hard to do it and I have high expectations because it is a pretty cool thing to win.”
The 17-year-old took one more step towards that goal Wednesday by winning the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association 51-kilogram title at Orchard Park Secondary School in Stoney Creek.
Adams has noticed a different atmosphere on the high school wrestling mats this season as everyone she wrestles brings their best in hopes of knocking off an OFSAA champion.
“It kind of gets nerve-wracking sometimes but it makes you try and train harder.”
That hard work has paid off.
“It is going well,” she said. “At the school tournaments, I have been really successful.”
In addition to winning an OFSAA title last year, Adams also won a 52-kilogram cadet provincial title and 53-kilogram cadet national title. This year, Adams placed third in the provincial juvenile championships at 52 kilograms.
“I had some tough matches and I lost my first match and I was automatically put in the consolation round,” she said. “I had to fight my way to third.”
Her goals is to win another national title and she is planning to compete nationally at the juvenile and junior level,
“I’ve been training hard and keeping to my strict training schedule and eating properly,” she said.
Adams trains four times a week at the Discipline Wrestling Club in Stoney Creek and never tires of the sport.
“It’s my love of wrestling,” she said. “It keeps me active and challenges me.”
Adam has challenged herself this season by competing in open events against university-aged wrestlers. She won the 48-kilogram division at the Brock Open, placed second at the York Open and also competed at the Guelph Open.
“I want to push myself and challenge myself against harder opponents, seeing what the level is out there and pushing myself out of my comfort zone.”
Competing at open events has encouraged her to work harder, get stronger and improve her technique.
After she completes high school next year, she’s hoping to wrestle in university and plans to attend either Brock or McMaster. Her decision will be based on what school offers the program she wants and which wrestling program appeals to her the most.
The following are results from the SOSSA wrestling meet held Wednesday at Orchard Park. The top two in each weight class advance to the OFSAA championships March 4-6 in Ottawa.
