SIMCOE ELIMINATED
The Governor Simcoe Redcoats senior boys basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 67-50 loss to Orchard Park in the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association AAA semifinals.
Scoring points for the Redcoats were Darren Johnston (15), Max Grant (11), Andrew Scott (8), Mitch McPherson (6), Mason MacEachern (4), Steve Christie (3) and Cal Anderson (3).
Leading scorers for Orchard Park were Karim Al Jnainati (15), Aleksa Milisic (14), Milos Milisic (14) and Zack Brady (12).
“We put ourselves in a big hole starting down 19-4,” Simcoe head coach Shaun Feor said. “Our team adjusts well and we moved to a matchup zone which gave them some problems.”
Simcoe trailed only 29-27 at the half, but couldn’t close the deal in the second half.
“Orchard Park has a lot of size and speed and they are very well coached,” Feor said. “They played a tough 1-3-1 zone which was difficult to penetrate and break down.
“In the second half, they could not miss from downtown and they pulled away.”
Feor expressed pride in the season put up by the Zone 4 champions.
“We will look to see how we can continue to build on this success next year,” he said.
BERG NAMED TO TEAM CANADA
Beamsville native Annie Berg has been named to Canada’s FISU Winter Universiade hockey team for the event in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.
The Brock University player and Canada begins their title quest against China Friday.
“Annie has been one of our best players from her first year when she stepped on the ice,” Badgers head coach Margot Page said. “Her speed is what separates her from everyone else. Annie’s competitive spirit to always be the best is why she is so successful in everything she does. Her passion is contagious and she has become a significant leader on our team.”
The 5-foot-9 forward is a third-year kinesiology student.
ATOM TIGERS OUSTED
The 15th-ranked Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene’s Skate Sharpening Tigers major atom A hockey team fell 8-0 to the 11th-ranked Erie-North Shore Storm in OMHA quarter-final series action.
Erie-North Shore took the series six points to zero.
The Tigers lost the earlier games 4-2 and 4-1 with Brennen Hagar, Carson McComber and Tanner Cutler scoring for Welland.
Welland finished with an overall record of 43-7-8.
PEEWEE TIGERS TIE GLANBROOK
Carter Kipp scored the game-tying goal for the Welland Telus Tigers just after the midpoint of the game as they salvaged a 1-1 tie with the Glanbrook Rangers in recent Niagara District major peewee A Pool A playoff action.
In an earlier game, Mitchell Tomaino scored twice to lead Welland Telus Tigers past the Grimsby Kings 2-1 in the first game of the Niagara District playoffs. Kieran McKenna answered back for Grimsby.
SEASON ENDS FOR BROCK MEN’S HOCKEY
Brock’s men’s hockey team saw its season come to an end with a 7-1 loss to the Western Mustangs in Game 3 of the Ontario University Athletics West Division semifinals.
“What a terrific season. I want our guys to be proud of this year,” Brock head coach Marty Williamson said. “We have to focus on school and come back hungry for success next season.”
