Ontario Ergometer Championships: Top 10 results and profiles
E.L. Crossley’s Scott Nuccitelli (left) is shown racing to a first-place finish at last Saturday’s Ontario Ergometer Championships at Ridley College.
Scott Nuccitelli was more than ready to defend his title at Saturday’s Ontario Ergometer Championships at Ridley College
“At the Canadian indoor championships, I got a PB and from there, I continued dropping my scores and now I am here today (Saturday),” the Grade 10 student at E.L. Crossley said.
After winning the Canadian title in the junior high school men 165-pound division, Nuccitelli topped 72 other competitors to win the Ontario junior high school men 150-pound division Saturday.
He took a cerebral approach to Saturday’s racing.
“For me, it’s mostly mental and I try to set a goal for myself, keep that in mind throughout the whole race and then try to drop it (do better) at the end.”
That approach left him gassed at the end of the race.
“It’s really painful, but it is great to win in the end and have fun during the race.”
He got started in rowing the summer before entering high school. His older sister, Lauren, got him interested in the sport.
Nuccitelli will be hoping to replicate the success he had on the water last spring. He was on crews that won gold in the open quad and silver in the lightweight quad at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association (Schoolboy) championships. He also had success in the summer competing in an eight with the St. Catharines Rowing Club.
“This year, I am hoping to go to Stotes (Stotesbury Cup) in maybe a lightweight four and win there with some of my friends at Crossley, and then do well at CSSRAs,” he said.
RILEY LEAVES COMPETITION IN HER WAKE
Riley Wake went from contender to champion Saturday at the Ontario Ergometer Championships at Ridley College.
After playing 10th last year, the Grade 10 student at Denis Morris placed first out of 50 competitors in the junior high school women’s division.
“A lot of the extra training and hard work really helped,” the 16-year-old said. “I train five or six times a week at the school and I do some other programs as well.”
Wake is in her second year of rowing.
“I play hockey and I’m athletic so I thought I would try rowing and I really liked it,” she said. “I am a really competitive person and I like hard work. It’s the perfect sport.”
Wake is oblivious to what is going on around her when she competes at ergometer events.
“I try to just focus on myself, not worry about anyone else and try to do my own personal best and the results will come,” she said.
She was thrilled to win an Ontario erg championship.
“I’m pretty excited and, as long as I do my best, I feel good about it,” she said. “That’s all that matters.”
Wake competed at Schoolboy last year in a four with Denis Morris and she’s looking forward to her second spring on the water.
“We are hoping to get first at Schoolboy so we are going to work hard this spring to get there.”
Her hard work this winter on ergometers has helped on the ice with the Niagara Rapids midget A hockey team.
“It really benefits my strength and endurance,” she said.
