June 6 sports: DM baseball; Port’s top athletes; Brock golf tourney; CEBL podcast
The Denis Morris Reds defeated the Thorold Eagles 5-4 in the finals to win the third annual Henderson’s Pharmacy High School Baseball Tournament.
The championship game featured strong pitching performances from Denis Morris starter Kyle D’Angela and Thorold starter Josh Larocque. D’Angela recorded seven strikeouts while Larocque recorded six.
Thorold jumped out to an early two-run lead but Denis Morris chipped away at the deficit and built a 5-2 lead. Thorold rallied with RBI doubles from Jacob Turner and Blake Suntz in the final inning. With the tying run on second, Denis Morris pitcher Trevor Sheppard was able to get Thorold’s batter to ground out for the final out of the game for his first save of the season.
D’Angela was named most valuable player for the game going 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, a walk and two RBI’s in four plate appearances. D’Angela was also the winning pitcher in the championship game.
Denis Morris also had hits from Colter Naphin and Justin Pisano each with two singles while Zach Veld and Luc Cecchini each had a single.
PORT’S TOP ATHLETES
Matteo Panunte and Chloe DeRoy were named Port Colborne High School’s athletes of the month for May.
Panunte, a Grade 9 student Matteo Panunte, represented Port in ultimate, sledge hockey and soccer. He had a outstanding first season in ultimate and was able to step into a very difficult position on defence. He recorded a game-winning point by intercepting a throw in the other team’s end zone against A.N. Myer. In soccer, he controlled the attack of the Bears through his position at defensive fullback and was able to set up many offensive threats with his ability to find the seams. His busy semester also included badminton.
Chloe DeRoy a Grade 12 student heading to the University of British Columbia next year to study psychology/sociology, has been a consistent member of the ultimate team in her four years of high school. She has consistently performed well on the team on both offence and defence. DeRoy also played girls hockey and was a great senior leader to many of the girls. In soccer, she had good strong ball control and an effective passer. She demonstrated great effort offensively and defensively from her centre midfield position. Her love of team sports also included her being a member of the Bears’ softball team where she was able to display her great attitude.
BROCK ATHLETICS GOLF TOURNEY
The 17th annual President’s Golf Classic, held at St. Catharines Golf and Country Club May 27, raised $75,000 for Brock University student/athlete scholarships
Nearly 150 golfers showed their support for the event which had Rankin Construction as the presenting sponsor for the third consecutive year.
“It’s an outstanding day. Athleticism and sport is alive and well at Brock,” university president Gervan Fearon said. “This tournament is important for our students and the university. It brings together sponsors, but also allows us to showcase the outstanding accomplishments and character of our student/athletes to our community in Niagara.”
The tournament, founded by former Brock president David Atkinson and the late David S. Howes, raises funds to help Brock’s student/athletes, who face the daunting task of balancing athletics and academics.
“Funding like this takes a big stress off of us as student-athletes,” said wrestler Jevon Balfour, who was named this year’s Brock male athlete of the year. “We can optimally use our time to get better and it also takes stress off the coaches as well. The mental boost it provides is unparalleled.”
Student/athletes at Brock not only make a significant contribution to the University with their leadership and community engagement, but also across the country, said Brian Hutchings, a vice-president administration at Brock.
“This event has a major impact and we’re overwhelmed with joy to see this show of support from the community,” he said. “The OUA and U SPORTS are full of talented student-athletes who don’t receive enough recognition. The level of commitment to athletics and academics by Canadian student-athletes is second to none.”
NEW CEBL PODCAST
The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL)’s inaugural season in its second month of play, the league has launched a podcast series called The CEBL Show.
The podcast will be hosted by TSN 1150 host, Sean Woodley.
With new episodes every week, the podcast series will feature guests from around the league and the world of basketball, as well as provide insights and updates on everything happening around the world of the CEBL and its 6 teams.
