Arrows edge A’s
The Six Nations Arrows rallied with three late goals to defeat the St. Catharines Athletics 8-7 Thursday night to tie their Ontario Lacrosse Association junior A best-of-five quarter-final playoff series at 1-1.
The A’s had taken Game 1 10-7 at home Wednesday.
St. Catharines built an 8-6 lead early in the third before the Arrows scored three unanswered goals, including the winner with less than a minute to play.
“Two-goal leads are the worst leads in sport,” A’s general manager Jeff Chcoski said. “We had chances to spread it to a three-goal lead early in the third and never did. We just let them hang around.
“It’s hard to close a team out like that. They played hard to the final buzzer, there’s no doubt about that, and they’re a quality lacrosse club.”
The A’s led 5-2 after one period and 7-5 after 40 minuets of play.
“It was a great game where both teams had chances,” Chcoski added. “I said right from the start I don’t see someone winning or losing by more than three goals.
“It’s going to be a tight, intense playoff series.”
Game 3 is Sunday at 7 p.m. at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
“You have to pick yourself up and dust yourself off and hold serve in your own barn and be ready to go Sunday,” Chcoski said. “I know in that dressing room the guys will be ready to go.”
Alex Simmons paced the A’s with five goals while Jake McNabb added two and Kealan Pilon one. Pilon, Carter Zavitz and Brayden Mayea chipped in with three assists each.
Tehoka Nanticoke led Arrows with three goals while Kevin Owen Hill and Travis Longboat contributed two each. Owen S. Hill also scored.
The Arrows out-shot the A’s 49-46.
