The Niagara Generals bantam football opened its Ontario Football League fall season with a lopsided 60-22 win over the Clarington Knights.
Niagara scored on every drive it had during the game and piled up 526 yards in total offence.
Leading the way for the Generals were: slotback Clayton Wilen, two receiving touchdowns and one rushing major; quarterback David Robinson, 244 yards passing yards, two TD passes and a rushing major; and single touchdowns by Cole Haan, Jayden Gurzi-MacDonald, Francesco Dalla Valentina and offensive lineman Liam Liddiard.
Wide receiver/kicker Nathaniel McAlpine was successful on three extra points, ran in a two-point convert and scored a rouge on a punt downed in the end zone.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Generals were led by linebacker Matthew Gichard and safety Ethan Barrow. The pair recorded many tackles for losses and kept Clarington in negative yards for most of the game.
“Overall, it was a great team effort and a great team win,” head coach Jim Storin said.
Next up for the Generals is a road game this weekend versus the Vaughan Rebels.
The Niagara Generals peewee football team fell behind 25-0 Cambridge at the half, but a strong second half resulted in a 25-0 defeat.
“A few more tweaks on the offence and my hard-working boys will have a successful year,” head coach Bruce Macrae said. “I am looking forward to seeing what they can do.”
