The Niagara Prep girls basketball team remained unbeaten in Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association play with a hard-fought, 85-76 come-from-behind victory over Lincoln Prep in Hamilton.
Niagara Prep, missing two starters, exploded for 31 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 12-point deficit and escape with the road win. Leading a balanced attack were: senior point guard Sarah Te-Biasu with 26 points; sophomore Emma Koabel with 23 points; and, Donna Ntambue, who recorded her third straight double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
Niagara, now 8-0 overall, is in the Chris Smalling Girls High School Tournament this weekend at York University.
RASO BACK WITH RIVER LIONS
The Niagara River Lions announced Monday Victor Raso will return as head coach and general manager of the Canadian Elite Basketball League team.
“I am incredibly thankful to the River Lions organization for believing in me and buying into my vision of making Niagara the best place in the country for Canadian professional basketball players to develop over the summer months,” the reigning CEBL coach of the year said.
Niagara finished first in league play before falling in the semifinals and Raso is looking to build on the foundation he laid during the 2019 season.
“Every member of our team left our program as a better player, and as a better teammate than they were when they arrived,” he said. “While our team accomplished many great things this past season — we fell short of our ultimate goal. We have some unfinished business to take care of.”
The River Lions are glad to have him back.
“Over the past couple years, Victor has been instrumental in the River Lions’ success both on and off the court and he is already working hard to build a team that will be a true contender in 2020,” River Lions president Jeffrey Sotiriou said.

Peewees champs in Caledonia
The Welland Telus Tigers major peewee A hockey team captured the Caledonia Challenge Cup Peewee Championship with a 4-1 record this past weekend.
Jordan Raso recorded the lone Welland goal as the team fell to the Parry Sound Shamrocks 2-1 in Friday’s opening game.
The Tigers rebounded with a 3-2 win over the Hespeler Shamrocks with Sean Sinclair, Ryan Reeves and Noah Bovine scoring goals.
Dayton Flatt, Sam McPhee, Raso and Bovine each found the mesh as Gavin Beck backstopped the Tigers to a 4-0 shutout over the Huntsville Otters Saturday afternoon to move into the semifinals.
Tyler Ray and Bovine recorded goals as Welland won the rematch over Parry Sound 2-1 to advance to the championship game. In the final, Welland defeated Niagara-on-the-Lake 2-1 on goals by Jaxon Vanderlip and Bovine. Dylan Pace answered back for NOTL.
Atoms top Stoney Creek
The Welland Shadow Auto minor atom A hockey team pounded the Stoney Creek Warriors 11-2 to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Thomas Russell was solid in net earning the victory.
The Tiger’s offence was led by Jordan Hotham, four goals; Brayden Farr, two goals and one assist; Dylan Wood and Ryan Rousseau, goal and an assist; Blake Hudak and Liam Seguin, two helpers; Ethan Rousseau, Mark Chambers and Antonio Mete, single goals; and, Hudson Bassi and Kingsley Lachnet with assists.
Minor peewees thump Port
Julian Belcastro scored four times and added two assists, and Riley Caron recorded the shutout as the Welland Tigers 91.7 Giant FM/Country 89 minor peewee hockey team beat the Port Colborne AE Sailors 17-0.
Tyler Laszlo, Colby Franchetti, Chace Buti, and Matteo Mete had two goals apiece and Carson McComber, Hudson Kipp, Mason Risto, Miller Miotto and Jared Duerden each netted single tallies.
With the victory, the Tigers improved to 4-0 in league play.
