Friday night junior B roundup: Falcons double Canucks, Panthers edge Junior Canadians
The St. Catharines Falcons rebounded from a rough loss at home earlier this week with one of their best efforts of the season Friday.
Curtis Egert scored a pair of goals as the Falcons doubled the Niagara Falls Canucks 4-2 in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference game at the Gale Centre in Niagara Falls.
“I’m happy with the way the boys responded after a tough loss Tuesday,” St. Catharines head coach Tyler Bielby said. “They played for each other tonight and the end result was a win.”
Bielby singled out the play of Egert.
“Most importantly, our captain tonight was a man on a mission,” he said. “It was a pleasure to watch him go to work and take over the third period with a big game-winning goal.”
The Falcons were without veteran forward Carson Edwardson who was suspended for an abuse of official infraction Tuesday.
“Brady Caruso played his first game ever as a forward and was a big part of our success in the third period,” Bielby said. “He blocked shots, got pucks out, and shut down the neutral zone. Not bad for a guy who has never played the position.”
Noah Blakely and Nick Volpatti also scored for the Falcons.
Ryan Donovan and Andrew Bruno replied for the Canucks.
Blair Coffin turned back 21 shots for the win.
Anthony Tremonte made 26 saves in a losing cause.
The Falcons are home to Pelham next Friday.
“This was our fifth game in eight nights. Now we get some rest, have a good week of practice, and prepare for Pelham and Welland next week,” Bielby said.
The Canucks are at Hamilton Monday, at Buffalo Wednesday and home to Thorold next Friday.
Panthers 3 Junior Canadians 2
Brandon Edwards broke a 2-2 tie with a goal nine minutes into the third as the Pelham Panthers topped the visiting Welland Junior Canadians 3-2 Friday in Pelham.
Hunter Godmere and Griffin Vaughan also scored for the Panthers.
Lucas Trimarchi and Ivan Osminin replied for the Junior Canadians.
Nick McGowan made 41 saves in goal for the Panthers.
Niagara IceDogs prospect Josh Rosenzweig made 29 saves for Welland.
