Catherine Foulem accorded herself well as a member of Team Atlantic that recently competed at 2019 National Women’s Under 18 Championship in Manitoba.
The 17-year-old member of the Prep Girls Hockey team collected a goal and assist in four games while acting as team captain.
“We were the only team that was made up of different provinces. The girls we competed against all played before. We just met at that event, but connected very quickly.”
Team Atlantic failed to medal but Foulem said it was not for a lack of effort.
“All of our games were really tight and we fought really well in all of them and learned how to be consistent, which is the most important part in those short tournaments,” she said.
She found being in a leadership role a natural.
“It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. All the girls were excited to play with each other because it was the best hockey we’ve played.”
Foulem played a key role, starting all but one game and was utilized on both special teams.
She feels the experience will help her development.
“It definitely helped me with the speed. You have to move your feet so I improved that way. When I go and play college hockey it won’t be as much of a surprise.
“I also learned you have to be consistent to win and I learned how to be consistent and make your team consistent. I think that will help me down the road.”
Foulem, a native of Dieppe, NB, has accepted a scholarship at Boston University beginning next season.
“I’m so excited. I think we’re going to have a pretty good team while receiving a great education. I can’t wait.”
She plans to major in biology and eventually go to medical school.
Before that, she wants to finish her career at Ridley on a high note.
“We’ve had a lot of injuries so far. Now I think we have our full team and I can’t wait to get things started and reach our full potential,” she said. “We would like to win in the JWHL, that is our ultimate goal and I think we can do it. We have a fast and skilled team that works hard all the time.”
Prep Girls Hockey
A full team effort earned the Tigers a 4-2 win against North American Hockey Academy Junior Women’s Hockey League action last Friday in Buffalo.
Lilli Welcke had two goals while Abygail Grexton and Carina Ouellete also scored. Brooke Loranger made 31 saves in net.

Tigers head coach Amanda Wark, a native of Welland, was featured on Hometown Hockey Sunday from the Rose City.
Prep Boys Hockey
Prep Boys Hockey won two of three games in Detroit last week defeating Little Caesars U18 (4-2), Compuware U18 (4-3) and losing 5-1 to Compuware U18.
The Tigers are now 18-5-1-1 overall.
Carter Giles led the way with three goals. Brady Hildreth had two, and Rylee Hlusiak, Ben Carter, Shaymus Stevenson and Colton Chipman each had one.
Brandon White picked up one solo win in goal, and combined for the second win with Tony Theodoropoulos.
“This was another great weekend for our group, as we got another chance to compete against some very solid opponents,” coach Mike McCourt said. “The boys competed hard, and found a way to win two of the three games, which was great to see.
“We’ll look to build off of this weekend with a good week of practices leading into our CISAA (Canadian Independent Schools Athletic Association) opener next Saturday at St. Andrews.”

Prep Boys Basketball
The Tigers got out strong in the first quarter leading 20-7 with a strong showing by Cormac McMahon and Johnny Avgousti. Rise battled back with the Tigers up by seven at the half. The third quarter was even going until a late 12-2 run by Rise with two minutes to go gave them the 82-73 win.
The Tigers also lost 108-58 to Orangeville. Dylan Kalambay led the way offensively with 21 points “A tough game for the Tigers against the No. 1 ranked team in Canada. The boys fought hard but faced a very experienced team on their home court,” coach Tarry Upshaw said.
