Falcons dominate Junior Canadians
What you see is what you get with Carter Geoffroy.
The 17-year-old is a throwback, an old fashioned defensive defenceman who plays it tough and doesn’t mind mixing it up.
Geoffroy doesn’t earn his keep collecting points, but he did pick up an assist as the St. Catharines Falcons dominated the Welland Junior Canadians 9-1 in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference game Friday at Jack Gatecliff Arena.
The victory was the fifth straight for the Falcons, who improved to 18-6-2.
The Junior Canadians dropped to 4-19-3 and have lost five in a row.
Geoffroy loves his role as a non-nonsense defender.
“(I’ve) always been a stay-at-home defenceman who takes care of my own end, takes care of my goalie and keep the pucks out,” the Sir Winston Churchill student said. “You need guys to get goals, but you (also) need guys to protect the house.
“You can’t always win games with offence, so you need some strong guys on defence.”
Geoffroy, who is a solid 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, hasn’t been the least bit intimidated, despite his first-year status.
“It’s not easy, but honestly I love it,” he said. “It’s way better than minor. You can push the guys around more and battle and compete.”
Falcons coach Tyler Bielby loves what Geoffrey brings to the rink.
“I would have love to watch him play in the ’70s, to be honest,” Bielby said. “He’s dedicated to getting better and he brings the same effort and same mind set to the rink every day.
“He’s a hockey player, through and though. You can see that the way he approaches the game.”
Bielby loves when Geoffroy lays on the body.
“When he plays physical, he’s the man playing against the boys,” Bielby said. “He’s a heavy player. I know if I’m playing against him my head is on a swivel at all times wanting to know where he is.”
The Falcons, coming off a huge 2-1 win last week over Caledonia, got off to a sluggish start before rebounding in the second and third periods.
“I was completely disappointed and not happy at all with our first period,” Bielby said. “We can’t got from beating Caledonia to bringing that effort. The boys were called out after the period and thought they showed up after that.”
Carson Edwardson had himself a night on offence with four goals and two assists while captain Curtis Egert chipped in with four assists.
Falcon facts: Trent Glenney and Michael Angrilli did not dress for the Falcons . . . Chase Johnson, Lucas Trimarchi and Chris Morris were scratched for the Junior Canadians . . . The Falcons will be hosting a food drive Friday, Dec. 6 and Friday, Dec. 13 for Community Care . . . The Niagara Falls Canucks defeated the Buffalo Regals 8-2 in the only other game Friday.
