IceDogs fall to Greyhounds
The Niagara IceDogs failed to pick up a point for only the second time in their last 10 games as they dropped a 5-1 decision at home to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Thursday.
The IceDogs, 11-13-4-1-1, trail the Barrie Colts by one point for second place in the Central Division of the Ontario Hockey League. The Colts have played five fewer games.
“It’s not like there was one thing. We thought maybe because we played well on the road we could just show up and the Soo would roll over, but they came out flying and we had no answer,” IceDogs coach Billy Burke said. “We were just flat. It’s probably the first time in 10 games, it was just a terrible, terrible effort.”
Sault Ste. Marie jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Robert Calisti and Cole MacKay before Oliver Castleman netted his ninth of the season late in the first.
They Greyhounds increased their lead to 3-1 when Jaromir Pytlik scored in the second, then put the game away in the third with goals by Ryan O’Rourke and Calisti.
Tucker Tynan made 41 saves in a losing effort while Greyhounds goaltender Bailey Brkin faced just 15 shots.
The IceDogs are home to the Sarnia Sting Saturday at 7 p.m. The team will wear specially designed ugly Christmas sweater jerseys which will be auctioned off following the game with proceeds to Community Care, St. Catharines and Thorold, and the United Way. As well, the annual Teddy Bear toss in support of Victim Services Niagara will be held.
