Redcoats advance to consolation final
Andrew Scott is a calming influence for the Governor Simcoe Redcoats.
The 17-year-old, Grade 12 student is known for keeping an even keel and level head on the court.
Scott pumped in 13 as the Redcoats topped the Port Colborne Blue Bears 61-36 in a consolation round semifinal game at the 65th Annual Welland Tribune Tournament Friday at Notre Dame.
The Redcoats now take on the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Niagara College in the consolation final.
“I just go out and stay emotionless and try not to let my emotions take me on,” Scott said. “I just try to play basketball and help the other guys be better.
“It’s kind of my personality.”
Simcoe coach Sean Feor loves Scott’s demeanour.
“The big difference from our team this year to last year is the amount of leadership that we have,” Feor said. “Last year we had a ton of veteran guys. He’s returning from last year and he provides a ton of leadership for us.”
Feor also appreciates’s Scott’s attention to detail on defence.
“He’s an absolute workhorse on defence,” Feor said. “He’s very selfless and gives up the ball and does all the little things you want a guard to do and he’s a great kid overall.”
The Redcoats had high hopes coming into the tournament but were stunned by an opening-round loss to the Centennial Cougars.
“When we lost that game, it was a tough loss,” Scott said. “We lost in the last seven seconds and then we turned on this mentality that we’re going to try and beat as many teams by as many points as we can.
“We just sort of took it and used it as a direction.”
The Redcoats bounced back with a 67-49 win over Lakeshore Catholic just hours after the loss to the Cougars.
“We talked to the boys after the game. We were disappointed but Centennial hit a buzzer beater. It was a hell of a shot,” Feor said. “They played well enough to beat us and that’s why you play the game. There is a silver lining to this and we got an extra game by going the consolation route and the boys are excited to be here.”
Port coach Scott Grover was thrilled to see his charges make it to the semifinals.
“We learned every game,” Grover said. “It’s really good for my guys. We’re a small school and it’s good for us to go up against the bigger schools and learn from them.
“We won a game and played better every game. We played with a lot of juniors and they did very well. The future is bright.”
