Weekend junior B roundup
The St. Catharines Falcons scored four times with the man advantage en route to a 6-1 win at Pelham in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference action Sunday afternoon in Pelham.
The win moves St. Catharines into a tie for second place with the Niagara Falls Canucks. Both teams have 64 points. The Falcons have earned one more win while the Canucks have played one fewer game. The two teams meet for the final time Monday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. in Niagara Falls.
“It was nice to get another win as we get that much closer to the playoffs,” Falcons coach Tyler Bielby said. “I thought we played a physical game and for the most part stayed disciplined.”
Bielby was pleased the way the Falcons took care of business in their own end.
“We have been stressing the importance of the defensive side of the puck and I thought you could see that in their game,” he said. “Over the last three games we have been fortunate to find the back of the net. As nice as that is, it’s our own end we must be proud of. We can’t score goals if we don’t defend to get pucks back.”
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead after one period and extended the lead to 3-0 after two.
Captain Curtis Egert led the Falcons offensively with three goals and an assist while Xavier Drummond added a goal and two assists. Thomas Lenart and Brady Caruso added singles.
Terry Bridgland netted the lone goal for Pelham.
Blair Coffin made 14 saves for the win.
The Falcons peppered Pelham goaltender Nick McGowan with 45 shots.
