Softball championships cancelled this summer
Due to the unprecedented situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Softball Canada, in consultation with the 2021 Canada Games Host Society and the Provincial/Territorial Softball Organizations, has made the difficult decision to cancel both the U14 and U16 Boys Canadian Fast Pitch Championships.
The championships were scheduled to take place from August 5-9, 2020 at Southward Park in Grimsby and at Jordan Lions Park in Lincoln.
Based on the recommendations from public health experts, this decision was made in order to ensure the health and safety of all the athletes, coaches, officials, support staff, volunteers and spectators. Moreover, logistical concerns, team selection timelines, venue availability, limited travel between provinces, and adequate training opportunities were also contributing factors.
“Unfortunately, due to the lead-up time required to host any Canadian championship and the current uncertainty around travel, facility openings and respective dates when play may be able to start, we regretfully will be cancelling all 2020 Canadian Championships,” said Scott Neiles, President of Softball Canada. “We would like to thank all our 2020 championship hosts for their diligent work in preparing to organize these championships. We share their disappointment in not being able to provide these premier events to the players, coaches, umpires, family members and fans who were looking forward to the experience.”
The men’s (U21) and women’s (U18) softball competitions will still be held next summer as part of the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games at Southward Park.
“While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to host two Canadian Fast Pitch Championships in 2020, we completely support Softball Canada’s decision,” said Doug Hamilton, board chair of the 2021 Canada Games Host Society.
BPSN and the COVID-19 pandemic
Like all small businesses dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, BPSN is not sure what the business landscape will look like when things return to normal. Our website is financed primarily through advertising revenues and partnership agreements with many local sports and educational organizations in Niagara. Our goal is to continue providing our readers with the extensive local sports coverage you have come to expect from our site. Since our inception, we have written more than 2,800 stories on our local athletes and teams. Many of our readers have given us one-time donations or send us monthly contributions to help offset our costs. We would be eternally grateful if others would consider doing the same by using the Support Us button located on the right-hand side of our home page below the mosaic.
