Jackfish add U22 team
The Welland Jackfish are teaming up with the Niagara District Baseball Association for a 22U Welland Junior Jackfish team for the 2021 season.
The Junior Jackfish, who will play in the Central Ontario Baseball Association 22U division, will serve as the feeder system to the Jackfish of the Intercounty Baseball League. Baseball Canada has ruled to change the current age group from 21U to 22U, which more closely mirrors age groups of collegiate leagues.
“The Jackfish are excited to form this partnership with the NDBA,” Jackfish general manager Jason McKay said. “This partnership and this team will allow the Jackfish to move on to the next step of helping Niagara baseball grow.”
The Junior Jackfish will play home games at Welland Stadium between May and August. The club will host 12 home games at the stadium and participate in several tournaments before entering the Ontario Baseball Association Eliminations and National Championship.
The Junior Jackfish will be managed by McKay, who will be relocating back to the Niagara Region after 10 successful junior seasons in Burlington.
“We are excited to be able to bring junior baseball back to the area and do it under the NDBA umbrella,” McKay said. “This team will be a great addition to the Niagara baseball scene and really assist the IBL Jackfish keep talent in the area.”
The roster will be made up of the top collegiate level players from the Niagara and GTA regions.

BPSN and the COVID-19 pandemic
Like all small businesses dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, BPSN is not sure what the business landscape will look like when things return to normal. Our website is financed primarily through advertising revenues and partnership agreements with many local sports and educational organizations in Niagara. Our goal is to continue providing our readers with the extensive local sports coverage you have come to expect from our site. Since our inception, we have written more than 3,000 stories on our local athletes and teams. Many of our readers have given us one-time donations or send us monthly contributions to help offset our costs. We would be eternally grateful if others would consider doing the same by using the Support Us button located on the right-hand side of our home page below the mosaic.
Thank you for your continued support.
