The Niagara IceDogs secured another one of their draft picks, signing 2021 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection 23rd overall pick Joey Costanzo to a standard player agreement.
The 6-foot-1 goaltender played the past two seasons with the Greater Toronto Hockey League’s (GTHL) Toronto Marlboros AAA.
Costanzo was regarded as the top goaltender of the 2005-born draft class.
“This is a big signing for us,” IceDogs general manager Joey Burke said. “Joey is the goalie we wanted and had he not gotten to us, it would have changed the landscape of our entire draft.
“As a staff, we feel he has the ability to be a star in our league. As we all know, you need a top goalie to succeed at this level. I truly feel we have added our future starter, and a guy capable of winning championships here.”
Costanzo told BPSN the night he was drafted he models his game after Andrei Vasilevsky and Marc-Andre Fleury.
“I am a quick, fast and athletic goalie and I like to use my size to make saves,” he said. “I play with poise and I always try my best to be a leader. I don’t wear an A or a C on my jersey but my team always feeds off of me with my energy. I am also extremely competitive.”
