A’s all-stars ready to shine
The St. Catharines WKML Athletics will be well represented at the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League all-star game Saturday in Oakville.
A total of six players from the Ontario champions have been named to the Western Division all-stars while A’s coach Steve Toll and his staff will be behind the bench for the game which will be played at the Toronto Rock practice facility beginning at 7 p.m.
Goaltender Cam MacLeod, defencemen Tyler Halls and Thomas Whitty, along with forwards Carter Zavitz, Kealan Pilon and Alex Simmons all made the cut.
“It’s so nice to be able to be going through this process with these guys,” A’s general manager Jeff Chcoski said. “I’ve know them for a long time and they deserve it.
“It’s a pretty good looking roster from what I’ve seen. I’ve talked to the boys and they’re all pretty excited to be part of it.”
Chcoski said since winning the Iroquois Cup Saturday night he’s been deluged with congratulations.
“There has been a lot of people who have popped by the shop (Niagara Brew Club) and if it’s been 50 texts, it could be 75,” Chcoski said. “It’s been a little bit overwhelming.
“I’m not trying to let my head get too big. I’m trying to let it set all in and this weekend will be the cherry on the top.”
Chcoski said he expects a competitive game.
“They want to win one more game,” Chcoski said. “They’re all in, this isn’t just fun. They want to finish the season off. Once they get there, you know Steve’s intensity, they will get all the other guys going.”
The A’s were informed Thursday morning that Toll and his assistants — Ian Rubel, Ken Millen, Rob Taylor, Kiel Matisz and Ian Llord, — were named coaching staff of the year.
“What a year for Steven,” Chcoski said. “It just keeps coming and coming.
“All those guys are super pumped.”
Chcoski said the A’s are also in the process of ordering championship rings for the players and staff and that he expects them to be presented at a banquet around Christmas.
