Thomas Markewich was named Brock male athlete of the week.
A.N. Myer grad Tre Ford had seven rushes for 54 yards and was 30-47 passing for 356 yards as Waterloo dropped a 34-13 decision to McMaster in Ontario University Athletics football play.
Also for Waterloo: Rushon Dagelman caught a 10-yard TD pass and had five catches for 60 yards; Justin Succar contributed one run for 11 yards and eight catches for 93 yards; Tyrell Ford had three solo tackles; and, Jack Andrews recorded two assisted tackles.
In Western’s 36-16 victory over Laurier, Jake Andrews had two solo tackles.
Brock’s Top Athletes
Governor Simcoe grad Mia Friesen and rower Thomas Markewich were named Brock’s athletes of the week.
Friesen, a first-year psychology student who is a scholarship athlete with the wrestling squad, scored five goals in 15-10 win over McMaster and four goals in an 11-9 loss to Laurier.
Markewich, a third-year medical sciences major from Regina, won gold in the men’s lightweight single and double at the Head of the Trent Regatta.
Brock Rowing
The Brock rowing team had a solid showing at the five-kilometre Head of the Trent Regatta which includes turns, obstacles and this year a strong current at the last bend.
Winners included: the lightweight women’s eight (coxswain Pilar Dietrich, Bow Laci Schute, Isabella Durcak, Rowan O’Neill, Jordan Isnor, Zoe Durcak, Madeline Hingston, Alicia Piazza and stroke Olivia Jose); Thomas Markewich in the lightweight men’s single; Thomas Markewich and Stephen Harris in the lightweight double: and, the men’s heavyweight coxed four (coxswain Clara Sebastianelli, bow Will Bryden, Daniel Brophy, Michael Ciepiela and stroke Sam Stewart).
Placing second were: the lightweight women’s four (cox Pilar Dietrich, bow Zoe Durcak, Jordan Isnor, Rowan O’Neill and stroke Olivia Jose); the lightweight men’s coxed four (cox Riley Pisek, bow Sam Maconco, Connor Dodds, Jared Boles and stroke Jonathan Cinquina); the lightweight men’s eight (cox Riley Pisek, bow Tony DiDomenico, Chris Gomez Benjamin Hersche, Adam Muldoon, Sam Maconco, Connor Dodds, Jared Boles and stroke Jonathan Cinquina); and, the men’s junior varsity coxed four (cox Kathleen MacDonald, bow Matt Irvine, Broden Ratcliffe, Tristan Haagsma and stroke Owen Nadeau).
Crossing the line third were: the women’s coxed four (cox Kathleen Macdonald, bow Jalyn Mowry, Faith Thomas, Sarah Slattery and stroke Victoria Collins); Stephen Harris in lightweight men’s single; and, the men’s eight (cox Clara Sebastianelli, bow Oskars Rugelis, Elijah Lopez, Keithan Woodhouse, Cameron Hickman, Will Bryden, Daniel Brophy, Michael Ciepiela and stroke Sam Stewart).
Brock boats finishing fourth were the junior varsity women’s four, lightweight women’s double.
Next up for Brock will be a Oct, 16 regatta on the Henley Rowing Course.
Niagara Women Perfect
The Niagara College women’s soccer team (5-0) clinched first place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West with a 5-0 win over the Sheridan Bruins.
Smithville Christian grad Terin Hultink netted the hat trick for Niagara and Saint Michael product Sydney Sica scored a pair of goals.
