Niagara Generals Week 4
The Niagara Generals peewee (under-12) football team remained unbeaten in Ontario Fall Football League action following 14-14 tie with the visiting Sarnia Sturgeons Saturday at Kiwanis Field.
One week earlier, Niagara had gone on the road to Sarnia and came away with a 36-6 victory.
The lone offensive major for the Generals was scored by Isaiah Benjamin on a pass from Lox Raducanu. The Niagara defence stepped up in the third quarter when Isaac Hiebert ran an interception back for a defensive touchdown. Spencer Macrae added a two-point convert for the Generals.
“We knew that the Sarnia Sturgeons were preparing for us after their loss the previous week and they did not disappoint,” Generals head coach Kent Wakem said. “They certainly came with an updated game plan and were ready to play. It was a great game to watch for the fans with lots of excitement.”
Wakem expects the season to continue to get tougher.
“We have some minor issues we need to clean up as playoffs begin in just over three weeks and we can expect the games to be much like the one we had this past weekend against Sarnia,” he said. “Our players had their first slow start since the season began and gave up a touchdown on Sarnia’s opening offensive drive. Other than that, the defence held strong until the fourth quarter when they gave up a touchdown on a trick play.”
Sarnia tied the score after causing a turnover on their 20-yard line.
“Our players understand that football is a game of inches where ball security and discipline are monumental, ” Wakem said
Niagara is at York (0-4) this Sunday at noon.
