Mooradian joins Rays scouting department
Katie Mooradian has made it to The Show.
The 24-year-old St. Catharines native was recently hired by the Tampa Rays for an 18-month internship through the Major League Baseball Diversity Fellowship Program.
“I’m so excited,” Mooradian said. “It’s a dream come true. This is the dream job!”
Mooradian, who begins her new position Jan. 31, 2022 ,will spend the 2022 season on the Rays advanced scouting team.
“I will be helping to create advanced scouting reports through video and data and assisting with game analysis as well,” she said. “All of the advanced reports are done off of video and data and I will be at all home games and do some scouting in-person.”
After the season, Mooradian’s role is still up in the air although there is a chance she may help out in pro and amateur scouting for the remainder of the fellowship.
Mooradian applied for several positions around World Series time last season and got several responses.
“I did an on-line virtual interview and also applied to the Rays for a advanced scouting internship separately,” she said. “I did a questionnaire for that and interviewed and they brought up hiring me as their diversity fellow.”
Mooradian said it was a nerve-racking process.
“I stressed about it constantly,” she said. “The hiring process was stressful and organizing for all the different interviews and filling out questionnaires but the Rays were really good for the entire process so it was super easy with them.”
Mooradian had multiple teams contact her requesting applications.
“I was kind of selective this time around because there was something specific I want to do and that’s scouting,” she said. “A few teams reached out to me for roles I wasn’t really interested in so I had to turn that down to pursue something I would be more interested in.”
Mooradian, a graduate of Brock’s sport management program, was slated to work for the Astros in 2020 season but the COVID pandemic wiped out all minor league baseball. She previously worked for the Astros in 2019 as Player Development Technology Apprentice with the Quad City River Bandits, and in 2018 was an intern with the Reading Fightin’ Phils of the AA Eastern League.
Last season she worked with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, the Low-A affiliate of the Houston Astros as a Player Development Technology intern. Mooradian’s position saw her in charge of all the video and technology for the club. She also doubled as director of team travel, setting the travel itinerary for the team, and accompanied the team on road trips.
She feels paying her dues last summer was essential.
“I think I kind of did that a little bit last year working in minor baseball. It’s definitely a grind and something I think everyone should experience because you put in the long hours and really understand of what it is to work in baseball and now I’m going to get the reward of working with the major league club,” she said.
She was rewarded by being able to attend all the World Series games in Houston.
“I was really awesome,” she said.
She also spent a week in Phoenix for the Arizona Fall League to do some scouting where she took part in MLB’s diversity pipeline scouting program.
All those experiences have Mooradian feeling much more confident about working in pro baseball.
“I feel so much more knowledgeable and so much more ready than I was last year,” she said.
