IceDogs ink Junior Canadians forward
The Niagara IceDogs added to their forward depth, signing forward Ilia Chmelevski.
Chmelevski was selected in the 11th round (202nd) overall by the IceDogs in the 2020 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.
The 18-year-old Northville, Mich., native has a goal in three games with the Welland Junior Canadians of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League this season. In the 19-20 season Chmelevski played with the Victory Honda 15U AAA, tallying 17 goals and 29 assists.
“We are particularly excited about this signing,” general manager Joey Burke said. “Ilia is a guy who has always performed regardless of the level, and he is a player who is able to adapt to all situations.”
Burke feels Chmelevski should be able to make the jump to the OHL full time next season.
“We have been able to keep a close eye on him this season and he has looked strong,” Burke said. “We plan to keep him developing with our affiliate in Welland and use him as a call up when needed, with him joining us full time next season.
“Ilia has the skill, drive, talent and work ethic to succeed at our level.”
The IceDogs had their three games this week postposed due to COVID-19 protocols affecting the team. Their next scheduled game is Tuesday, Jan. 18 at home versus the Peterborough Petes.
