The Niagara IceDogs ventured into hostile enemy territory and came away with a 5-4 shootout victory over the Sudbury Wolves in Ontario Hockey League action Friday night at the Sudbury Community Arena.
“Tonight was definitely the most rocking atmosphere we have faced on the road all year,” IceDogs coach Billy Burke said. “You could tell it was two teams with a lot of pride that treated it like a playoff game and atmosphere.
“It was physical and intense.”
David Goyette gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead after one period with his 29th goal of the season.
The IceDogs then exploded for four goals in the second, two by Pano Fimis, and one each from Danil Gushchin and Brendan Sirizzotti.
Marc Boudreau countered for the Wolves.
Sudbury tied the game in the third with goals by Nolan Collins and Liam Ross, at 18:05 to send the game into overtime.
In the shootout, Juan Copeland and Fimis, with the winner, scored for Niagara.
Goyette had the lone shootout goal for the Wolves.
Josh Rosenzweig continued his fine play in net for Niagara with a 41-save performance.
“Rosey was our rock once again and a great night for Pano Fimis with two goals at enormous times of the game and the shootout winner,” Burke said. “Very proud of all the guys.”
Thursday night in North Bay, the IceDogs dropped a 4-1 decision to the Battalion.
Gushchin netted the lone Niagara goal while Rosenzweig made 43 saves and was named the game’s third star.
Niagara, who are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games, are 21-37-3-1 overall and five points back of the Wolves for ninth spot in the Eastern Conference.
The IceDogs are home to the Peterborough Petes Sunday at 2 p.m.
