IceDogs ousted from playoff picture
The Niagara IceDogs were officially eliminated from the Ontario Hockey League playoffs Tuesday night.
The IceDogs dropped a 6-3 decision at Sudbury while the Peterborough Petes edged the Barrie Colts 1-0 in overtime. The IceDogs have four regular season game remaining and now trail the Petes by 10 points for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
“We didn’t have the pop we have had the last few weeks but still had more grade A chances than them, just unfortunately ran into a hot goalie tonight,” IceDogs coach Billy Burke said.
Niagara fell behind 3-0 in the first period as Alex Assadourian, Ethan Larmand and Dominik Jendek scored.
Dakota Betts got the IceDogs on the board with his eighth of the season late in the second.
Jendek restored Sudbury’s four-goal cushion with his second of the game 5:32 into the third before Liam VanLoon potted his 20th of the season for Niagara. Goals from Assadourian and Nick DeGrazia made it 6-2 Wolves before Declan Waddick scored at 19:54 of the third for Niagara.
Niagara held a 35-34 edge in shots. Sudbury goaltender Mitchell Weeks was named the game’s third star.
Josh Rosenzweig made 28 saves in net for the IceDogs.
The IceDogs are in Peterborough Saturday and home to the Kingston Frontenacs Sunday at 2 p.m.
