Ridley alumni continuing a tradition of excellence
While Ridley rowers are primed for action this weekend at the Canadian Secondary Schools Association Regatta, several rowing alumni are also making news.
Lucy Black ’19 is coming off a PAC 10 conference title with Stanford last weekend and is off to the National Conference of Athletic Associations championships in the varsity eight next weekend. Black will also be shooting for a seat with Rowing Canada at the U23’s this summer after competing last year in the Rowing Canada Aviron U23 women’s double.
Rylie Wake ’21 just finished third with the University of Massachusetts at the Atlantic 10 Conference. Wake will be helping Ridley’s Rowing Summer Programs and trying out for Team Ontario for the Canada Summer Games.
Charlotte Drennan ’20 recently completed her second year of kinesiology studies at the University of British Columbia where she is a member of the varsity rowing program.
Alex Cook ’19 is a member of the varsity team at St. Francis-Xavier and competed at the Canadian University Rowing Championships last fall.
Gabrielle Cook ’20 completed her second year at Tulsa where the rowing the team finished third overall in the American Athletic Conference.
Eva Sabine ’18 has been accepted into University of California, Berkeley for her masters in chemical engineering.
Nico Schramm ’20 stroked the UBC second eight to victory at the Brown Cup versus arch rival University of Victoria and is vying for a seat in the St. Catharines Rowing Club eight that will be racing at English Henley Nico will also be trying out for Team Ontario at Canada Summer Games.
Seth Moyer ’18 is completing his third year with the Yale lightweight team where he has been a part of two Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges championship teams. He is currently in the second varsity eight.
Ethan Enns ’18 rowed in the UBC second eight to victory at the Brown Cup versus UVIC this past spring. Enns is completing his fourth year as a Thunderbird and has rowed on three championship teams.
Clark Schultz ’17 stroked the UBC first eight to victory at Brown Cup versus UVIC and will be racing with the school at UBC at English Henley.
“We are always so proud of our alumni,” girls coach Siobhan McLaughlin said. “From those that continue to row in university, club, and national programs, and those getting involved and giving back to sport through coaching, volunteering, and helping to run our summer camps, we are proud of the people they have become.
“This weekend we are christening two boats, one after a former coach at Ridley (Don Monroe), and the other after an alumni, Maria Maunder who won an Olympic Silver medal in the W8+ at the Atlanta Games. Our current athletes are too young to have seen that, but it’s a great recognition of what some of our alumni have accomplished.”
