Local roundup: IceDogs sign D; A’s drop second straight; Junior B’s begin playoffs
The Niagara IceDogs have signed defenceman Ryan VanNetten.
VanNetten, who was drafted 216th overall by the Flint Firebirds in the 2020 Ontario Hockey League draft, was recently named to the 2021-22 Ontario Junior Hockey League Second All-Star Prospect Team.
The 18-year-old native of Simcoe played last season for the Brantford 99ers where he tallied 23 points in 53 games.
“It has been a dream of mine from a young age to play in the OHL and I couldn’t think of a better organization to play for. Thanks to everyone who has believed in me and supported me,” VanNetten said.
Athletics drop second in a row
The St. Catharines WMKL Athletics lost their second game in as many nights, dropping a 14-7 decision at Toronto in Ontario Junior Lacrosse League action Thursday.
The A’s trailed 4-2 after one period and 11-5 after two.
Gavin Howard and Keaton Zavitz paced St. Catharines with two goals each while Carter Accursi, Jackson Webster and Reid Lowe added singles.
The A’s, 9-6, sit in fifth place with 18 points. St. Catharines continue their hectic schedule with a game Sunday in Orangeville before hosting Oakville Wednesday at Canada Games Park.
Junior B’s begin playoffs
The St. Catharines Athletics junior B’s take on the Guelph Regals Friday at home at 8 p.m. in Game 1 of their best-of-three playoff series. Game 2 is Monday, June 27 in Guelph followed by Game 3 Tuesday, June 28 at Canada Games Park.
The B’s finished the regular season with a 14-6 record while the Regals were 13-7.
