IceDogs deal Dickinson for seven picks
The Niagara IceDogs cut their losses with Sam Dickinson and dealt the promising defenceman to the London Knights Wednesday in exchange for a whopping seven draft choices.
The IceDogs drafted Dickinson with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 Ontario Hockey League draft but the Toronto native was a no-show at training camp.
“We had no intentions of trading Sam Dickinson when we drafted him, he was the best player available,” IceDogs general manager Darren DeDobbelaer said. “We were unable to secure a meeting with his representation and family to convince him to report to camp. After an aggressive offer by London, we thought this was the best move for our organization moving forward and in the years to come.”
The IceDogs will also receive the fifth overall pick in next year’s draft. League rules stipulate if a first-round selection does not sign then the team not signing him receives a pick one slot lower in the following year’s draft.
The IceDogs, who traded away several draft picks this summer for established players Pasquale Zito, Nathan Ribau, Matthew Papais, David Jesus, Vsevolod Gaidamak and Nolan Dunn, restocked their cupboard with the deal adding second-round picks in 2024, 2025 and 2026, third-round picks in 2023 (North Bay), 2025 and 2026 and a fifth-round pick in 2023.
“We have to look after future years coming up and this was an offer we couldn’t refuse,” IceDogs assistant general manager Wes Consorti said.
The IceDogs continue camp this week in preparation for their first exhibition game, Sunday, Sept. 4 at Kitchener at 2 p.m. The IceDogs also take on Windsor Monday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Vale Centre in Port Colborne.
