Golden tournament for Luey
Keegan Luey makes no bones about how much lacrosse means to him.
“I love everything about playing lacrosse,” he said. “Lacrosse is my life.”
The 11-year-old St. Catharines native comes by his love of the sport naturally — his father Tim Luey played at the junior A level with the St. Catharines Athletics and coached at the university level while grandpa Bob Luey is a member of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and one of the most respected individuals in the sport.
Keegan Luey added to the family’s already impressive lacrosse resume recently when he captured a gold medal with Team Ontario at the U11 Minor Box Lacrosse Nationals in Langley, BC.
“It just felt great,” Keegan Luey said. “One of the best feelings of my life.”
Keegan Luey was the youngest player on the team but still managed six goals and nine points in seven games as Team Ontario went undefeated.
“My role was to take face-offs and help score goals,” said Keegan Luey, who attends Power Glen Public School.
Dad Tim Luey was super proud of his son, who was also a member the St. Catharines Athletics 2021 U13 Provincial A championship team where he was again the youngest player on the squad.
“It was awesome,” he said. “It was fun to sit back and watch. So much of his career I’ve coached him and when you’re coaching your kid you’re trying to coach everybody so you might be talking to kids on the bench while your kid might be out there doing something good, bad or otherwise, so you miss a lot of moments.
“It was fun to just sit in the stands and soak it all it and watch it all.”
Keegan Luey began playing lacrosse at the paperweight house league level and quickly moved up to the tyke travel level.
“He has been playing lacrosse since he could, really,” Tim Luey said. “He just loves the sport. Always has a stick in his hand. If he’s at home he’s probably got a stick in his hand.”
Team Ontario defeated Team BC 8-5 in the gold medal game. Overall, it outscored its opponents 85-8 in the tournament.
“As you can see from the scores, it was a pretty special team,” Tim Luey said. “Keegan was very fortunate to be a part of such a great team. It’s an experience I don’t think he’ll ever forget.”
