Falcons top Canucks for ninth straight win

The St. Catharines Falcons extended their winning streak to nine games with a 2-1 victory over the Niagara Falls Canucks in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Tuesday night in St. Catharines.
The Falcons are now 13-2-1 and lead the Golden Horseshoe Conference standings by five points over the Hamilton Kilty B’s. Their .844 winning percentage is third overall in the GOJHL to London (.893) and Waterloo (.857).
The Falcons host the Hamilton Kilty B’s Friday. The Kilty B’s are the last team to defeat the Falcons when they rallied with three goals in the third period en route to a 4-3 overtime victory Sept. 30.
St. Catharines coach Tyler Bielby will take the win, but wasn’t overly happy with the effort.
“Sloppy win on a rare Tuesday night,” Bielby said. “We managed to keep the puck out of the net, but we have to be a lot better than we were tonight. Too many guys didn’t come ready to play and need to be a lot better starting tomorrow at practice.”
Following a scoreless first period, the Falcons got on the board when Blake Yetman scored just 48 seconds into the second. The Canucks quickly answered with a goal from Benjamin Kay less than five minutes later to even things up at 1-1 heading into the third.
Yetman, who netted the winner in overtime last Friday versus Fort Erie, fired his second of the game at 13:16 of the third to give St. Catharines the lead.
Josh Johnson earned the win with 25 saves.
“Yetman had a step to his game tonight and was rewarded with two goals and Josh Johnson was steady and gave us a chance to walk away with the two points,” Bielby added.
Avery Alves faces 33 shots in goal for the Canucks.
Niagara Falls dropped to 6-9.
