Nov. 21 Niagara College report: Basketball and volleyball
The Niagara College Knights men’s basketball team pushed its winning streak to four games with a 71-68 road victory over the Redeemer Royals Saturday night.
The Knights improved to 5-2 with the win while Redeemer fell to 1-5 with the setback.
“This was a big win for us as we managed to stay composed and close out the last couple of possessions to get the victory,” Niagara head coach Phil Mosley said. “Ethan Alino-DelaCruz was huge for us tonight. He distributed the ball and scored in key situations.”
Alino-DelaCruz finished with 13 points, eight assists and four rebounds.
Also contributing to the win were: Kenneth Reckley with 13 points and nine boards; Rahim Bardi with 12 points; Kennan Larmand with 10 points; and, Delroy Grandison with nine points.
Earlier in the week, Niagara shaded Conestoga (4-3) by an 87-85 margin led by: Larmand with 18 points and five assists; Reckley with 14 points and nine boards; Alino-DelaCruz with 12 points and seven rebounds; and, Reggie Williams with 12 points.
Niagara hosts the Mohawk Mountaineers (6-1) Thursday at 8 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Janee Harrison had 19 points, nine rebounds and six steals to power Niagara’s women’s basketball squad to a 71-62 triumph over the Redeemer Royals.
The Knights evened their league record at 3-3 while Redeemer dropped to 2-4.
Also contributing to the win for the Knights were: Jamira Rousseau with 16 points, six rebounds and six assists; Molly Taylor with eight points and 10 rebounds; Taryn Mitchell with eight points and seven boards; Angelica Lapensee with seven points and six boards; and, Olivia Krieger with six points.
Earlier in the week, Niagara edged Conestoga 63-57.
Leading the way for the Knights were: Taylor with 17 points and six rebounds; Rousseau with eight points and seven assists; Kate Roth with eight points and 15 rebounds; Harrison with eight points and five boards; and, Mckenna Jackson with eight points.
The Knights host Mohawk (1-5) Thursday at 6 p.m.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Niagara’s women’s volleyball team pushed is winning streak to four matches with a 3-1 victory (25-15, 25-14, 19-25 and 25-21) over the Redeemer Royals.
The Knights improved to 4-2 with the win while Redeemer dropped to 4-3 with the defeat.
Leading the way for the Knights were: Annastasia Droppert with 18 points thanks to 16 kills and two service aces; Abbey Gooder with 11 points; and, Natasha Desjardins and Montanna Taylor with nine points.
In other matches last week, Niagara swept Mohawk 3-0 (30-28, 25-22 and 25-23). Leading scorers for Niagara were Desjardins (10), Hope Nicholson (9), Hannah Cowie (7) and Gooder (7).
Niagara hosts the Boreal Vipers (0-7) Saturday and the Cambrian Golden Shield (3-4) Sunday. Both matches are at 1 p.m.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Niagara’s men’s volleyball squad improved to 4-2 on the season with a 3-1 (21-25, 29-27, 25-22 and 25-22) triumph over the Redeemer Royals.
Redeemer fell to 4-3 with the loss.
“I’m proud of the boys’ grit in this one,” Niagara head coach Steve Stone said. “Redeemer is a tough barn to win in and the guys played with fight and perseverance that led to a big team win.”
Elijah Bugiardini and Dallas Melnick led Niagara with 11 kills each. Leading scorers were Melnick (14), Bugiardini (12), Ashton Nieuwets (11) and Tyler Carmichael (10).
Earlier in the week, the Knights recorded a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21 and 25-18 sweep) of Mohawk.
Leading scorers for the Knights were Melnick (19), Connor Gambell (10), Bugiardini (8) and Nieuwets (5).
Niagara hosts Boreal College (0-7) Saturday and the Cambrian Golden Shield (6-2) Sunday. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
