Raiders and Wolfpack advance to consolation semifinals

The Holy Cross Raiders advanced to the consolation semifinals of the 59th Annual Standard Kully’s Boys High School Basketball Tournament with a 68-15 victory over the St. Catharines Collegiate Saints Tuesday.

“I am obviously happy,” Holy Cross coach Randy Conlon said. “Lucas Muon set the tone for us in the very first quarter after not scoring a point yesterday.”

Muon hit five threes in the first frame on the way to a game-high 20 points.

“We were ice cold yesterday and didn’t hit anything but we shot the ball well today. Collegiate struggled offensively but they play hard and I respect their kids,” Conlon said.

The Holy Cross coach has more to work with this season compared to last.

“We have a deeper team. We had an OK junior team last year and I had mostly Grade 11s last year. I am little more positive about this year.”

Conlon is thrilled to get three games in The Standard tournament.

“I am really happy for the kids. If we could have dumped Ridley, we would have been in tough against Sir Winston today. We are on the side of the draw that we belong on.”

Collegiate coach Adeel Ahmed was philosophical in defeat.

“It is a work in progress. One day at a time,” he said, of his team which is a mix of younger and older players. “We need to work on our fundamentals moving forward but I liked our effort and I like how they persevered right to the very end.”

Scoring for the Raiders were: Muon 20, Durico Wynter 8, Dwayne Osbourne 6, Joe Young 5, Owen Corcoran 5, Miguel Funes 4, Raphael Osagie-Bright 4, Kyle DeLuca 3, Arin Sayegh 3, Greg Wenglowski 2, Terrell Wallace 2, Owen Bradford-Andrew 2, Gorazd Bojcev 2 and James Martinelli 2.

Replying for the Saints were Colton Joyce 7, Mark Paguyo 6 and Matthew Negrillo 2.

The Kully’s/Regatta Sports Players of the Game were Muon and Edson Lopez from Collegiate.

WOLFPACK 64 REDCOATS 36

Led by 16 points from Tyler Foster, the West Niagara Wolfpack punched their ticket into the consolation semifinals with a 64-36 triumph over the Governor Simcoe Redcoats Tuesday.

Also scoring for the Wolfpack were Riley Zulauf 14, Kabeer Phull 7, Ben Unrau 6, Shiv Ramdial 5, Nate Skeldon 5, Evan Fletcher 3, Aiden Dawe 2, Clayton Maurice 2, . Will Burleigh 2 and Jayden Khan 2.

Scoring for the Redcoats were Reza Changizian 9, Rahiem McLean 6, Lochlan Belliveau 5, Sutter Pilon 4, Artem Trusevich, Bobby Muir 3, Amari Watson 3 and MJ Brophy 1.
