High school report: Myer football, Phoenix hockey
The A.N. Myer Marauders senior football team handed out it awards Wednesday and sharing the Team MVP Award were Arden Martinez and Tyler Goforth.
Evan Goforth was named the Offensive MVP and Aiden Hunt and Cam Papineau shared top defensive honours. Hunt was also named the Defensive Line MVP while Ozman Kunna, McRory Grant, Josh Horton, Thomas Alexander and Cade Ivanchuk shared the Offensive Line MVP Award.
Ben Maglicic was named the Most Improved Player, Jonny Colcuc and Eugene Park shared the Special Teams MVP award and Rookies of the Year were Graham Walters and Fran Dalla Valentina.
For the first time in program history, the team handed out the Glenn Timlock Grit Award and it was presented to 2014 player Kyle Whalen.
Whalen, a past graduate and player, had a special connection to Timlock, who passed away in 2020.
“It’s recognizing a player that would have the characteristics that Glenn would have exemplified. Someone that wasn’t necessarily the top athlete, but someone who was all heart and played with toughness and grit. A player that had to work very hard to become a big contributor to the team. A player that was committed to practice each and every day and played each snap with as Glenn called it ‘with vengeance.’ Glenn passed away a couple of years ago, and is deeply missed by the Myer family. It’s with fond memories that we remember Glenn. He was a tough football man that had the biggest heart. He was a true gentleman.”
Also at the awards ceremony, Christian Kuriata (2018) and Eugene Park (2022) were presented with the Bob Erwin Leadership Award .It is not an annual award. It is an award that recognizes a player that bleeds Myer football.
“A player that not only is a captain, but a player that is more like a coach on the field. A player when it’s not always popular, pushes not only himself, but his teammates. He holds everyone accountable. Christian and Eugene are those players. They were and are true leaders not only on a football field, but in their everyday life. Christian is currently coaching on the Wilfred Laurier staff and will be the head coach of the Cambridge Lions travel team next year. Eugene is still pursuing his playing career, and eventually will no doubt coach and mentor young players for a lifetime.”
