Goforth and Park grab Tier 1 MVP honours
A.N. Myer’s Tyler Goforth and Eugene Park have been named the offensive and defensive MVPs of the Niagara Region High School Athletic Association Tier 1 senior football league.
The Marauders went unbeaten in NRHSAA play, won the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association Bowl and advanced to the school’s first Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Bowl game since 2016.
Goforth chalked up some impressive numbers from the quarterback position. In the air, he completed 133 of 189 passes for a 70.4 per cent completion rate. He passed for 2,038 yards with 26 touchdown passes and only two interceptions. On the ground, he rushed for 601 yards and seven touchdowns.
“Tyler was the fuel for our offence. His commitment to improving his skills the last few off-seasons was incredible,” Myer head coach Dave Buchanan said. “That commitment resulted in an amazing season with great team and individual results.”
There was more from Goforth than just the impressive stats.
“Not only is he a great player, he’s an incredible kid that is coachable and selfless.”
Buchanan described Park as the epitome of a leader.
“He received our Bob Erwin Leadership Award that goes to a player that bleeds Myer football. He bought into the process and was a huge asset to the Myer program,” he said. “Not only a great leader, he was an incredible player for us. He was consistent all year on the defensive side of the ball especially. There were a few games where he completely dominated and took away the outside run game from some powerful players. We were fortunate to have him in our program the last five years.”
Also receiving votes for league offensive MVP honours were West Niagara’s Xavier Zatylny and Tyler Foster, and Sir Winston Churchill’s Brady Pupek. Also receiving votes for defensive MVP honours were Myer’s Aidan Hunt and Arden Martinez, Churchill’s Pupek and Centennial’s Ty Dawn.
