Friday junior B roundup: Falcons clip Canucks; Kilty B’s rally past Hawks
Newcomer Aiden Berry was a winner in his debut between the pipes as the St. Catharines Falcons defeated the Niagara Falls Canucks 4-1 in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Friday night at the Seymour-Hanna Sports Complex.
Berry, acquired from the London Nationals earlier this week, turned back 16 shots as the Falcons improved to 27-4-2. They trail the Hamilton Kilty B’s by three points for first place in the Golden Horseshoe Conference but own three games in hand.
St. Catharines’ .848 winning percentage is first overall in the GOJHL.
Calvin Petrovksy got the Falcons going with his fourth of the season early in the game before Kyle Glenney made it 2-0 12 minutes later.
“Petrovsky got us on the board 15 seconds in on Sunday night. He decided to one up himself and get us on the board 11 seconds into the game tonight,” Falcons coach Tyler Bielby said. “From there I thought the boys put together a solid 60 minutes.”
The Canucks netted their lone goal when Alexander Hebblethwaite scored just seconds after Glenney scored.
Parker Forlin made it 3-1 early in the second before Nathan Robertson concluded the scoring later in the period.
Carter Geoffroy played his first game as a Falcon this season since being picked up at the trade deadline and picked up an assist and eight minutes in penalties.
“Thought the guys battled really hard for their new teammates, Geo and Berry,” Bielby said. “Both young men had really good games and we are thrilled to have them as teammates.”
Niagara Falls goaltender Mihalio Corovic made 39 saves in a losing effort.
Each team went scoreless in six opportunities with the man advantage as the teams combined for 87 minutes in penalties (55 Niagara Falls, 32 St. Catharines).
“Wouldn’t be a Falcons/Canucks game without a little passion and edge,” Bielby said. “There was a ton of compete on the ice that led to chippy play at times. It’s important stay disciplined and focus on the two points in front of us.
“I was happy to see us come together as a team and stick up for one another but we need to make sure we are staying on the right side of the line.”
The teams meet again Sunday at the Gale Centre in Niagara Falls at 3 p.m.
Falcon facts: St. Catharines forward Blake Yetman picked up two assists and now has 22 goals and 51 points in 29 games.
Kilty B’s 5 Blackhawks 4 OT
The Hamilton Kilty B’s roared back from a 4-0 deficit to earn an overtime win versus the Thorold Blackhawks at Port Colborne.
Daniel Vasic had two goals and Jack Sykes and Brendan Grenville one each as the Hawks built their lead less than one minute into the second period.
The Kilty B’s began their comeback with two goals by Noah Vandebrink and one by Brodie McIntyre in the second, tied the game at 4-4 late in the third and then won it when Vanderbrink completed the hat trick five minutes into overtime.
Christian Lynch made 50 saves in net for Thorold.
Leland Gill, who came on to start the second period in relief of David Egorov, turned back all 20 shots fired his way to earn the win.
