Jan. 23 Niagara College report: Men’s basketball back on track
The Niagara College Knights men’s basketball team halted a three-game losing streak with a pair of impressive wins last week.
Niagara defeated Redeemer 93-76 last Wednesday and then thumped Canadore 73-54 on Sunday to improve to 7-5 in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association action.
Leading the way for Niagara against Redeemer (3-9) were: Ethan Alino-DelaCruz with 22 points and six assists; Reggie Williams with 20 points; Delroy Grandison with 11 points and 13 rebounds; Kennan Larmand with eight points; and, Adrian Pajor with seven points.
In the road victory over Canadore (0-12), the Knights built quarter leads of 24-11, 46-25 and 65-39.
“This was a nice win on the road,” Niagara head coach Phil Mosley said. “Our guys were able to establish themselves in the first half and build a comfortable lead by executing on offence and bringing defensive pressure and intensity. We were able to rotate all of our players through the lineup and provide some much-needed rest for some starters.”
Top performers for Niagara were: Alino-DelaCruz with 15 points; Grandison with 14 points and seven boards; Larmand with nine points; Marquise Lara-Caston with nine points; and, Williams with eight points.
Niagara is at Sheridan Friday at 8 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Niagara’s women’s basketball team saw its OCAA record fall to 5-5 following a 62-57 loss to Redeemer.
Redeemer, which improved to 4-6 on the season, built quarter leads of 27-12, 34-26 and 43-41 to knock off the Knights.
Topping the stats sheet for Niagara were: Taryn Mitchell with 12 points; Angelica Lapensee with 10 points and seven boards; Jamira Rousseau with nine points; Eden Ferraro with eight points and seven rebounds; and, Janee Harrison with eight points. Kate Roth had 10 rebounds in the game.
Niagara is at Sheridan (0-11) Friday at 6 p.m.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Niagara’s women’s volleyball squad had a .500 week, sweeping Sheridan 3-0 (25-16, 25-10 and 25-19) and losing 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 17-25 and 22-25) to St. Clair.
Niagara’s record sits at 8-5 on the season heading into a Wednesday road game at Fanshawe (3-9).
Top Niagara scorers against Sheridan were Abbey Gooder (11), Montanna Taylor (8.5), Natasha Desjardins (7.5) and Hannah Cowie (7.5). Gooder had a team-high 10 kills in the victory.
Leading the scoring against St. Clair were Desjardins (16), Cowie (12), Taylor (10) and Hope Nicholson (8). Desjardins topped Niagara with 16 kills.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Niagara’s men’s volleyball team has an 8-5 record in OCAA action following a split of its matches last week.
Niagara lost 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 20-25 and 21-25) to Sheridan (5-7) and recorded a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19 and 25-22) sweep of St. Clair (5-8).
Top scorers for Niagara against Sheridan were Colin Prelaz (11.5), Tyler Carmichael (8), Dallas Melnick (8) and Ashton Nieuwets (7.5). Prelaz led the way with 11 kills.
Leading the scoring versus St. Clair were Prelaz (16), Melnick (12) and Carmichael (10). Prelaz had 14 kills and Melnick had 12.
