Webster the new C of the A’s
Jackson Webster was an easy and obvious choice to captain the St. Catharines WMKL Athletics this season.
The 21-year-old Halton Hills resident is not only a five-year junior, but is also hard working, productive and well respected.
“It means a lot,” Webster said of wearing the C. “There’s a lot of history around here. You see the pictures down the hall of the guys who have worn it before and it means a lot and the history behind it.
“The guys I came in with, those 99’s, they set a good precedent for me to follow and hopefully I can carry on what they started, as well as the guys before them.”
A’s general manager Jeff Chcoski loves Wesbter’s natural leadership skills.
“He will lead those others into the future of our program. He is going to teach the others how to be a captain,” Chcoski said.
Joining Webster in the leadership group will be assistants Keenan Zavitz (home and away), Mitch Armstrong (away), Tye Steenhuis (home) and Cameron Pak (away).
“As far as we’re concerned, we probably have four or five captains in that dressing room. It’s that strong a dressing room,” Chcoski said.
Webster’s quiet and calm demeanour will have him leading by example.
“For me, I like to be the guy that just does,” he said. “Don’t need to say too much. I want guys to feel they are welcome in the situation. You have captains that want to be in control of everything, but for me, I just want to pull guys in the right direction and bring them communally together with what we want to do as a team and that’s bring home another championship.”
Webster, who compiled 30 goals and 76 points in 18 regular season games last season, can’t believe his junior career is coming to a conclusion.
“It’s crazy it’s all coming to an end,” he said. “It’s a really big blessing and a great experience to have and I’m grateful for every second of it.”
He has high hopes for the A’s this season.
“I think we’ll be able to surprise a lot of teams,” he said. “I think people won’t necessarily count us in on every fight, but we’re further along than people think and I’m excited to see what we can show everybody.”
Away from the rink, Webster, who is majoring in sports management at Canisius College, is doing a summer internship with the Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League and working part time in the family business.
The A’s open the 2023 regular season Monday in Six Nations before hosting Peterborough in their home opener Wednesday, May 24 at 8 p.m. at Canada Games Park.
