Weekend lacrosse roundup: Junior A’s split; Junior B’s win twice
The St. Catharines WMKL Athletics split a pair of Ontario Junior Lacrosse League games on the weekend, defeating Kitchener-Waterloo 10-5 while dropping a 9-8 decision at Oakville.
The split leaves the A’s with a 3-1 mark in regular season action.
Friday in Kitchener, Oliver Vanyo made 49 saves while Christian LeFeuvre and Tye Steenhuis paced the offence with three goals each.
Keaton Zavitz added two goals and three assists while Logan Fletcher and Julian Race also scored.
The next night in Oakville the offence dried up late, failing to score in the final 10:40 of the period.
Zavitz had three goals and two assists for the A’s while Steenhuis added two goals and two assists. Zackary Toll, Gavin Howard and Colton Armitage also scored for St. Catharines.
Ty Wilson got the start in goal for the A’s and made 41 saves.
The A’s have a hectic week beginning with a home game Wednesday at 8 p.m. versus Burlington followed by a road game Friday in Brampton, a Saturday home game at 7 p.m. versus Kitchener-Waterloo and a Sunday game in Orangeville.
Junior B’s take two
The Junior Athletics won a pair of games in junior B action, topping Elora 10-9 and edging Windsor 9-8 to run their record to an impressive 11-2.
Ryan Andrews and Landon Jeckles each had two goals versus Elora while singles went to Cody McNeil, Jack Parker, Trent Mooradian, Adam Ponting, Colton Armitage and Ian Kohut.
Mike Napoli made 21 saves in net for the win.
The next night versus Windsor, Joe Joe Brandt made 41 saves as the A’s edged the Clippers.
Kohut had three goals and two assists while McNeil also scored twice. Andrews, Parker, Ponting and Jeckles rounded out the scoring.
The A’s host Welland Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Canada Games Park before visiting the Generals Thursday in Welland. The A’s also host Guelph Saturday at 4 p.m.
